Pros

The people are the best reason to work for Premera Blue Cross. There is a true sense of team spirit and willingness for everyone to pitch in when projects are at their toughest. I'm also really impressed with Premera's stand on ecological and earth-friendly topics. We have a beautifully maintained campus that has thriving wildlife on it. Additionally, our new food service vendor shows a commitment on the part of Premera to support and provide options for a healthy lifestyle for it's employees. The size of the company is another plus. It's big enough to be impactful and "well-known", yet small enough to keep the culture warm and friendly.

Cons

The parking isn't the greatest (though Premera does provide offsite parking with a shuttle service). Work/life balance is good but only if you're in a team that's lucky enough to have it.

Pros

Premera is always hiring because they retain workers that are basically seat warmers and they never fully staff a department so salary employees are overworked. The rule is, get trained by PBC and move on to where the money is. There are some amazing Team Leaders and Managers, though!

Cons

Over worked, understaffed, low pay and CEO of the company is totally out of touch with employees. Team Leaders in other parts of the company are about as educated as a door knob and have zero people skills. They bully their newest most vulnerable employees. Premera is not what it used to be 8 years ago and yet they're still way behind in technology. And they need to focus on why they have turn over. Exit interviews should reveal this!!!

Pros

Collegial atmosphere with strong sense of shared purpose and some truly excellent bosses in certain departments. Mountlake Terrace campus is placid and peaceful setting. Numerous opportunities to participate in free wellness and health promotion programs. Very few people are pressured to work long weeks. Company has been financially sound for more than 10 years (Gubby is an excellent financial steward).

Cons

Overall management style weighs heavily toward paternalistic and stodgy and would come across as stifling by anyone age 30 and younger. Management is very two-faced about telecommuting -- saying it is allowed, but in reality it is actively discouraged in departments with control freak bosses. (And yet the company parking lot overflows every day.) Company is 10 years behind in technology (and no one outside of IT seems to understand the transformational value of technology). In terms of seeking excellence, company seems to aim for regional rather than national standards.
