Toxic culture driven by ego-centric and erratic CEO

Pros

The people you work with are the smartest in the industry and you get to work on some really interesting technology.

Cons

The CEO is seen as someone who prevaricates widely and has questionable to outright bad decision-making, leading to constant changes in direction, lack of trust from employees and an exodus of respected leaders across the company. And it's getting worse.

Good job for good engineers

Pros

This is a good place to be a solid, independently driven engineer. The problems are challenging and the other engineers and technicians are clever, with tons of collective education and experience. Your peers will challenge you if you ask for feedback or input, or leave your work alone if you don’t. There is an incredible culture among the ICs to listen and support one another.

Cons

This company has seen a lot of leadership turnover. I think one reason is that there are frequent high-level direction changes without low-level input. Middle and senior leaders do carve out space for their teams to solve the right low-level problems, but it seems to burn them out.

Mission-driven company with incredibly talented people

Pros

1) The people are super talented and passionate about what they're doing. 2) There'e a real opportunity to make a significant impact in this space. 3) The leadership team is actively listening to employees' feedback and concerns, and is moving in the right direction.

Cons

This is a start-up, which means the pace can be a bit hectic and chaotic at times, and the direction of the company can shift. If you need a lot of structure and are uncomfortable with change, this is probably not the place for you.
