Bad middle management, top management in oblivion

Pros

Great technically challenging work and interesting problems to solve on a daily basis. Working on moonshot impactful problems. Coworkers are brilliant and humble, lots of opportunities to learn from them.

Cons

Despite all the great things about working here, the erratic, chaotic and pompous middle management makes it hard to be happy. Culture of feedback and dialogue is lacking, decisions are made in a very hierarchical way and you are only informed of them. Aggressive deadlines maybe common in startups but here people literally whip up deadlines mid conversation. Lack of humility from management. While people in some parts of the company have growth opportunities, a majority of technical roles are dead end in terms of growth prospects.

Don't Let the Grandiose Vision and Hype Fool You

Pros

The possibility of working on cutting edge research and working on something that MAY change the world is cool. It makes for a good dinner party conversation.

Cons

1) This place is basically for those who don't want grad school or a post doc to end. Not a real job. 2) It's completely unclear if quantum computing will ever turn into anything, and if it does, it's unclear if superconducting electronics will be the winner. 3) Low Pay and extreme unlikelihood that the company will ever convert your ownership stake into anything tangible. If you are the sole breadwinner for a family and older than early 30's this is not a sensible place. 3) CEO is unstable, rude, and not realistic

Pros

Rigetti has incredible talent across the board , both in sheer quality and breadth of expertise needed to build this technology. The company is focused on building a business and not just doing research - this is repeated nonstop from the CEO down and is the key driver in attracting this level of talent. Most importantly, the level of progress in such a short time is staggering. This is complicated technology, but the achievements of this team and the system put in place to drive innovation are big strengths. It's been incredibly fulfilling to see the rate at which both the technology and the organization have grown since I joined.

Cons

Intense environment with highly ambitious goals for the technology and business - definitely has an impact on level of work/life balance across the team. I don't hear people complaining about doing the work - in fact, it's the opposite - but the company needs to be mindful about how long this pace can be sustained. The company has grown so quickly that better communication on our goals and the awesome things that are happening will help motivate people even more. There is strong communication between adjacent departments, but could be much better across the board on business goals and in highlighting achievements of various departments.
