Pros

Company benefits and the people you meet at ross

Cons

Company does not provide stability for the employees and lies about flexibility. They make huge decisions with little to no notice like changing Work from home schedules and forcing people to come into the office more just because we had a “bad year”. Morale around the work place is at an all time low especially after getting removed benefits and no bonus. Company loves to say they give workers flexibility but if you ask for a flexible schedule you get punished for it. Lots of talk of people searching for jobs elsewhere. Company is punishing both buyers and planners because of a bad year and it’s not fair that we get punished for macroeconomic factors like inflation. Also if you hire people and tell people that they will be working only 2 days in the office and that is the “ end state “ don’t lie and change it a few months later. People make decisions about their lives based on their work schedule and it is unfair for people who chose this job based on the schedule to then lie and backtrack. In addition, your promotions in this company are solely based on where you are placed. Great employees get the short end of the stick if they are placed in an area that’s understaffed because they are held back to cover the area instead of getting promoted in a timely manner.

Pros

Financially stable company with good benefits especially with the extra days off around the holidays.

Cons

Lots of busy work that don’t go anywhere. Directors and above are difficult to work with because they are too comfortable with their way of doing things and are not open to new ideas. You have to be very careful with what you say to them because they’ll make a big deal out of something minute and tell leadership which can hurt someone’s career. Their interactions with their direct reports is rude, demeaning and sometimes culturally inappropriate. Their interactions with leadership is the opposite. There is little to no accountability with how some directors and above treat their direct reports even if several associates have escalated the issue to leadership and HR. Work/life balance is worse since WFH. You can work 10 hours straight without a lunch break and your director is still demanding more out of you. Recognition is not sincere and feedback is more demotivating than constructive.

Pros

Holiday closure. Summer fridays. Free bagels - not a pro, listing it only to meet the minimum character requirement for the “pros” portion. Free bagels doesn’t improve quality of life.

Cons

Unreasonable expectations. No regard for the fact that the extra funding you just got last minute will require you pulling an all nighter. Yes we’re fluid/fast moving, that’s our business, but at least try a little bit to make it easier for merchants. Expect buyers to be reachable at all hours (ex: notifying teams on details that require immediate action at 7:30pm). The company has ONLY acknowledged global current events, specifically police brutality and systemic racism, AFTER employees expressed disappointment that the company did not address it, a heartless move further proving they do not care about employees. Many levels of employees are protected as to not be overworked EXCEPT for buyers (ex: hourly limits for AB1s, planning team needs approval to run any and all ad-hoc reports, minimizing the workload of sample team). However the BUYERS workload is never taken into consideration, and the company makes that very clear by the protection shown to other employees. The lure of good benefits is completely clouded by negative culture. Great benefits don’t make the day in day out any more positive or make our jobs more manageable - we are all still wildly unhappy on a daily basis despite the “great benefits”. Oh and the global pandemic? They want just the buyers back in the office ASAP too - no surprise to anyone. Hundreds of companies have their employees still at home. We understand being in the market is critical and ultimately will have to happen of course, but at the right time and not at the expense of our health or our families health. The country is in a bad place, yet Ross still will forge ahead with opening. The damage is done, now delaying a few weeks doesn’t erase the bad choices that have so far been made.
