Communications Department Highly Mismanaged

Pros

Rotary is a great organization with an incredible diverse global membership. Being able to witness the volunteer work of Rotary Club Members worldwide and the positive impact they make is very rewarding to be a part of. Peer to peer the staff is great and the benefit package is very good.

Cons

The Communications Management Team is self serving and doesn't consider the best interest of the staff. Over the last few years they've let go of many of the top talented team members and have rewritten or created new job descriptions to suit the wants of a few managers that dominate all efforts of Communications. The environment continually proves to be toxic as people leave their jobs in Communications. I wouldn't recommend working in this department under current management. Other departments at Rotary

We appreciate all your contributions to Rotary during your time here and greatly value your feedback. While change can be difficult for some and can result in a shift in priorities and responsibilities, we’re very pleased that any changes in our Communications department over the last few years have not led to layoffs. We believe that we have a talented, committed, and flexible staff that are well equipped to reach and engage a global audience in a variety of ways. Each matter brought to the Global People & Talent team is taken very seriously and is investigated accordingly. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to GlobalPeopleandTalent@rotary.org, should you like to discuss further. - Global People and Talent Team

Pros

You'll meet incredibly smart, friendly people and support an organization that does great work.

Cons

Ill-informed mandates from the Board and Trustees receive little push-back from upper management, which leads to projects that make no sense. (This is part of why Rotary is struggling to stay relevant.) Work environment depends on your manager; some are progressive and flexible, and some are traditional.

An ok place to work

Pros

close to public transportation, right in downtown Evanston which is great for restaurants and shopping. Good work/life balance. nice to be a part of an organization that is trying to do good and improve lives.

Cons

it's a sick building, they can't decide if they're a nonprofit or a corporation, there were rats in the building. Also, women were given rules about how much makeup they could wear and things like that so they didn't offend the middle eastern Rotarians who came to the building on occasion. Only one person was promoted in the 2 years I was there and that was after she worked there for 7 years, so not a lot of room for growth.
