Pros

Inspired by the people and science all around. Really impressed that the Lab is taking on LCLS2 - huge project.

Cons

Some groups have a culture that is resistant to change. Wake up and smell silicon valley!

Pros

There are many extremely bright, talented and dedicated individuals at SLAC from the bottom up. Except for some pockets, most people go out of their way to help each other, and together they are able to accomplish really outstanding science, technology advances, and research support.

Cons

As with any large and diverse organization, there are some areas (mostly in the support functions like HR) where policies are more bureaucratic and draconian. In a matrix structure, people easily lose direct connection with the mission and goals they support, like a nameless hired-hand or an easily replaced cog in a large machine.

Computing division leadership needs to be changed

Pros

SLAC is a part of Stanford University and this comes with prestige. The bay area is beautiful and the SLAC staff are passionate about the work they perform.

Cons

The CIO, ACIO Services and EA are inept, autocratic, and destructive individuals. Instead of performing the important roles they were assigned they spend their time crafting Powerpoint presentations for the CIO to use to mislead Lab leadership and business managers to advance their myopic goals. They have produced countless presentations and roadmaps but haven't consulted with their customers or the Computing staff in this process. It is like they are creating their own reality because they don't like the one we have. The trio is absent any leadership skills and are failing again and again with opportunities to engage with staff to actually make things better.
