Pros

Job security. It is very difficult to get fired for incompetence. High Pay but low raises and hard to get promoted.

Cons

There is no accountability. Managers fail to warn/discipline staff for not meeting deadlines. Without accountability, it is hard for excellent performers to stand out and move up. The company prefers to hire from the outside than promote from within. Low morale in the company. ESOP vests after 5 years to try and combat their poor retention rate.

Pros

STV, and specifically the Building and Facilities Division of the Baltimore MD office, has a dynamic leadership, knowledgeable, client focused and is very pro-active on Business Development. Irreproachable values percolate through the entire group and never have I witnessed anything else than fair play and collaborative work for the good of the projects and project teams. The design team is highly motivated and truly enjoys the work. A rigorous QAQC process and a consistent and extensive library of standards (CAD details, notes, titleblocks, spreadsheets and report templates) developed throughout the years, and kept up-to-date, allows designers and engineers to efficiently produce quality plan sets and deliverables all can be proud of. Work life balance is possible and encouraged with the expected occasional big push that is in the nature of our industry and that is always recognized. Great benefits, ESOP and more shows that STV cares for the employees personal lives. Unequaled IT service (that is actually there to help you), social events, fund raisers, company paid Friday morning breakfasts and occasional goodies baked by a couple employees (who must live secret lives as pastry chefs) also make STV a truly pleasant work environment.

Cons

Leaving for a better commute. It took me a long time to make the decision as the "Pros" listed above are hard to come by.

Different Experience with Marketing Department

Pros

It's been a while since I worked at STV. Was looking up info on a new company and came across the vitriol and negative comments about the marketing department. Not to say that anyone is lying but my experience was very different. I started there as a Proposal Coordinator and rose to a Proposal Manager after a couple of years. It was a new field for me and I was a bit shaky. I didn't produce the big submissions initially but I did pretty good on the smaller ones. The senior managers (who are still there) mentored me through my shortcomings and helped me grow into a strong proposal manager and I became the go to for the some of the larger submissions. They helped me improve my writing and my proposal development process. I was really organized and driven so this environment worked for me. Don't get me wrong, it was tough -- they pushed me a lot and challenged me to be better. Sometimes it wasn't easy but it def wasn't "abusive" as one reviewer said. You just have to hunker down and get the work done. Nothing is personal. Which is hard to find these days -- reason I am leaving this other job. I only left STV because of location and a friend introduced me to another industry. So, if you like being in a place with folks who have high expectations and strive for better, this environment may work for you too. You have to be willing to do the work and it really pays off. Helped me a bunch!

Cons

Like I said, it's been a while so not sure how things are now but back then one of the main issues was getting information from the technical experts -- but that is everywhere. Even in the financial industry! The other issue for me was work, life, balance. Had kids and needed more time at home. Hope that's better now.
