Pros

-CEO is great -fast growing company

Cons

-recruiters at samsara are on quota's and rarely ever hit their numbers -additionally there was never training to update information or talk tralks for when Samsara moved into a more mature start up so they would share facts/information that was true to Samsara when the company was series A/B size -burn and turn environment similar to Samsara's sales team is also true to recruiting -very political, if recruiting leadership does not personally like you (even if you are performing) you will be pushed out and fired - this happened a handful of times creating a constant fear of job stability -recruiting teams are extremely micromanaged by all managers -hiring managers never gave recruiters the time of day and were not respected in the slightest -recruiting leadership is extremely exclusive and cliquey

Samsara Response

Thank you for taking time to write a review. I am sorry your experience at Samsara was not a positive one. I wanted to address a few of your concerns: Quotas & Partnership - Recruiters at Samsara are no longer on quotas since February 2020. When we were on quotas, we expected that minimum 80% of our team would be meeting or exceeding performance expectations, which was consistently true. We now set goals for our recruiters that are balanced between the number of hires, increasing diversity, and improving talent partnership with hiring managers to best support the needs of the business. We expect hiring managers to help drive hiring as much as our recruiters do. Pitching Samsara - Samsara is a rapidly growing company with an employee and candidate experience that is evolving as we navigate this fast growth. Our recruiters and hiring teams are pitching a different Samsara now than what they were pitching a year ago. We expect the experience to evolve as the company evolves and goes through various stages. We also expect our recruiters and hiring teams to understand changes so they are providing accurate information to our candidates. Leadership - Our Recruiting leadership team (myself included) strives to make sure that performance feedback is fair and consistent. We recently implemented updates to the company-wide performance review process that improve the quality of the performance feedback and fairness throughout the process through cross-team calibration.

Pros

- CEO seems competent - Not much else

Cons

Waited a few months before posting this so I wouldn't be easily identified - Pay is bad, it's maybe 80% of what you would get elsewhere at non-FANG companies - Tons of micromanagement from managers that really shouldn't have been managers - A ridiculous amount of nepotism. Unless you're drinking buddies or old friends with management and the executive team this will probably be the worst place you'll ever work at. Promotions are given based on how much you're liked and how much you advertise your work (no matter how small) rather than how capable you are. - A ton of Senior Engineers that would be entry level at any other company; the technical decisions some of these engineers make are so bad that I wonder if I'm getting dumber having to constantly course correct their projects. I should be able to trust my peers to do their jobs well. - Management uses PIPs as a scare tactic. I've seen good engineers get PIPed for not being a "team player" or for some other unknown criteria because they spoke to a coworker about not being happy - I've heard of people being retaliated against for wanting to switch teams - CTO is MIA - The technical stack isn't complicated. The complexity is the massive amount of tech debt and bad code design.

Pros

No pros. You could say that the food is a pro but it is seriously unhealthy. Chips and Rockstar drinks. An easy walk to work since you're not in a busy district of SF.

Cons

Believe the reviews and check out the Most Recent ones. This place is a real toilet of a company. Seriously this was the WORST company I have worked for ever. Several reviews talk about the all in one approach and style to leading people and it is true. There is one recipe for all representatives on how one on ones are done, activities to be done, selling approach, same considerations for time off regardless of performance..The environment is truly a boiler room with new managers that have low to no emotional intelligence. First time managers moved to director roles equals what you can imagine. Immature "leaders" that are in a lot of need of leadership training and development. Micromanagement from a few leaders seems to be the ideal action and flavor of the day, month, quarter. Sales numbers are being missed more than ever. Instead of reviewing this with strategy and tactful changes, the answer has been to MICROMANAGE MANIACALLY. Dashboard obsession and supposed coaching to the dashboard daily. There is a manager that literally could not deliver feedback without being mean and DEMORALIZING [also in another review] and horrible changes to the department are apparent when power is given to people that should not be in power. Numerous mangers and above need massive amounts of leadership training. Motivation does not come from metrics management day in and day out. Prepare to be treated as a child, a very incompetent child. I have not missed quota yet. I know that the hammer will come slamming down with more micromanagement if I ever do. You can't help but laugh at being such a fool for joining this company. Honestly it stinks because even the sales people learn bad habits because of the sales motion here. Discount, discount, discount, pressure blue-collar buyers, sell on trial. Many sales reps. that came on board with little or no experience in the past leave with some bad sales habits which isn't their fault fully but is a result of this horrible churn factory. This isn't a tech sell, this is more like B2C retail selling. Even COVID-19 procedures were disorganized. Profits over people, profits over healthy company culture, profits over using strategy to run the company. It's a circus daily. Tool rollout constantly is disorganized and current tools like check out systems are always breaking or freezing. Terrible company, terrible middle managers and promoted middle managers, great peers in the grunt with you. People are searching for jobs right now and trying to leave, even in this tough job environment with shelter in place.
