Pros

Great place to learn a new technology stack. CEO and CTO are amazing, but, huge disconnect with sales and know only product.

Cons

You want to believe in this company. Really, want, to, believe. Recruiting is top notch and will objection handle all your fears. When it comes down to it, it’s sales leadership. I’m talking specifically about top level VPs and GMs. Initially they knew how to get some good numbers up but when things go wrong that are process/product related, no leadership accountability. VP/GMs will lie to you, to your face even, and 100% don’t care about their sales employees (unless you’re from Meraki). If they want you out, they will actively tell you to pursue areas that they know won’t be successful because they want you to fail and that’s not a one off instance. Unless you can live off of a base that is below market rate and laughable, don’t plan on making any good money. If you’re not straight out of college, don’t work here. Dead serious. Read the other reviews: quotas are not correctly set, PIPs are handed out like offer letters, products fail and they are only focused on the pushing new products. Product features reign supreme here. These people don’t sell with value. Not concerned with keeping clients. If you have to highlight “check out prices” on the website...this is a burn and churn model. Ask anyone in an account management role about hardware failures or even worse, products being tested on customers. HR in my exit interview agreed even that these things were problems and said “yeah we heard this and are looking into it.” Look harder and be actionable. Feel bad for mid management. Many have hardly any experience and they’re just trying to be successful too and taking orders. The website in certain areas is lying about capabilities for marketing purposes. Anyone who worked there knows what I’m talking about.

Pros

The CEO is hands down one of the best leaders I have worked for. The company is extremely successful, amazing benefits, and there are tons of great people to work with.

Cons

Be careful if you are joining for sales. There is definitely room to make a lot of money, but the culture became very toxic. Doesn't seem management cares at all for its employees, and you are given nearly impossible quotas and metrics. Especially if you have a bad territory, you'll be afraid of getting fired even if you just started. They use scare tactics and will put you on plan, even if you knocked it out of the park the previous quarters. They change quotas all of the time, and people are constantly in fear of their job. Also, even though you have unlimited PTO, it's frowned up to leave or ask for time off, and don't expect to leave before you make 100 dials in a day. It's a glorified call center. This company will be successful, but the culture can be quite toxic, so make sure you're ready for that. The pay is also way below industry standards.

Pros

Inspirational CEO Good Benefits Stock Options- the company has had a meteoric rise and seems destined to continue to do so Superior product & a gifted engineering dept. Free lunches $200 a month Uber/Lyft credits Fast tracked career due to success

Cons

Culture: Sink or swim. Great if you're doing well and really miserable if you aren't. At times it felt like a scene from the Wolf of Wall Street. It's a highly pressurized grind culture, very bro-y with limited diversity. There is an expectation that you are at your desk at all times. Day to day: Pipe is 80%+ self sourced. You'll need to cold call a few hours a day every day. Quoting, getting discount approvals and generating proposals could be much more efficient. Financing- I believe this has been covered in another review but this is the most frustrating part of the Samsara sales cycle. A 3rd party financing company is required to give monthly payment options (an industry standard in transportation) to customers. A large % of customers are not approved and you are left in a situation where someone wants to purchase and you literally can't sell the product to them. This may be a teething problem as Samsara grows but it is a huge source of frustration especially as targets grow. Business Systems/Processes: Often try to build in-house systems and bolt them onto the CRM which leads to things inevitably breaking. Fixes for these bugs can take weeks and even months, probably a teething problem but very frustrating. It's hard to know if this is a cost saving thing but the cost to productivity should justify investment in some better systems. Work/life balance- This is not something that is fostered. It's a regular occurrence that reps receive calls from management and directors whilst on PTO. Expect calls in the evenings and on the weekend from your customers and prospects. Other- Without going into specifics communication was poor. ADR's take a paycut to progress to AE which I've never heard of before. Pay discrepancies between people doing the same role were common. Targets seemed to be plucked from the air, increasing by 230% when I was there with no additional resources and smaller patches. In summary, Samsara isn't for everyone, but it may be for you. Don't expect to be developed as a rep but if you can grind it out there is real earning potential. For me the juice wasn't worth the squeeze. There are companies that are better to work for who pay more in the Bay Area. If you get a funny feeling when interviewing that this might not be the place for you you are probably right. If you love the grind, high pressured fast pace environments and enjoy cold calling you'll love it.
