Poor upper management

Pros

The company is a well known name, and puts out interesting product for children.

Cons

In the department where I was, there was a lot of incompetence at the upper management level, which meant there was also a lot of competition at that level. Where there are lack of skills, there is fear of discovery, which means a lot of finger pointing. That of course, trickles down in their ability to manage lower level employees, which affects their ability to do their job.

Pros

The pros of working at scholastic were the casual work environment, location (soho, nyc) and relative low stress of the position.

Cons

The overall quality of developers working at Scholastic wasn't of the highest caliber. The opportunity to really learn new technologies and be on the cutting edge wasn't there. However, being an ecommerce site and not a cutting edge business application, this was to be expected. I just needed to move on for my own professional and personal fulfillment.

Pros

In theory, there are lots of benefits to working for Scholastic. In reality, I'd rank their benefits package as one of the few positives of the company.

Cons

Scholastic is a company whose business practices are rooted in the 1970s. It's astonishing how poorly the company has changed with the times - whether it's antiquated information systems to printers from 1989 to a reluctance to invest in product development for modern kids - Scholastic is a dinosaur of a business. Another problem is that senior management is bloated, while the assistant/associate level remains thin, despite receiving the least amount of compensation for doing most of the work. It's a political workplace with very little accountability or structure, and very little room for advancement.
