IT department is amazingly inefficient

Pros

The company pays pretty well for the area, and it's possible to maintain your position without doing too much work.

Cons

The data services IT department is astonishingly inefficient and wasteful. A response to another review, the company stated proudly that Sentry has the largest IT organization in central Wisconsin. I'm sure that's true, and that's exactly the problem. Sentry has thousands of people doing work that could be accomplished by about 150 skilled developers and database admins. That's not to say they don't have skilled developers--they do, but the project managers and directors tend to be incompetent and there are rarely sufficient requirements passed to developers. My department hilariously tried to implement a half-agile methodology. We had scrum meetings every other day, no sprint review, but a "sprint planning" where the project manager simply told us what we were doing the rest of the month-long sprint. The "sprints" often ended up being useless since the project manager was unable to address logistical issues by the time it ended. As a result, for months at a time I did practically nothing at work. No one really cared, because the sprints were so unproductive anyway that I blended in. I could go on for hours about this, but suffice to say, the Sentry IT department is one you want to avoid if you are interested in gaining skills for your career. If only I could get this portion of my life back...

Sales at Sentry

Pros

Sentry exists in a world that starts on January 1st, and ends on December 31st. If you work hard and get a good territory where you can find yourself with competitive premiums, you just might be a superstar. Enjoy it for the year, and then get after it as it will all reset the following year.

Cons

Management is very important and expects to be treated as such, while they work hard, it is not always efficient.

Pros

They have a good 401k . They match up to 6% and you are fully vested from the time you sign up.

Cons

Not open about how they price customers annual premium. The under writing staff does not underwrite they only drive premium. you can have a customer with a Workers Comp mod of 1.25 and they will give 25-30% credit and then you can have another account with a 0.80 Workers Comp mod and they will issue 10% credit. They bad mouth competition saying that they are fly by night companies such as Travelers, Hartford and Employers. Save your money and frustrations and use another company for your business insurance needs. Sentry is 10-15 years behind the modern insurance model. It takes Sentry 15-21 days to provide a quote for your new auto even for a current customer. Every insurance company I know can give you an auto quote in minutes not days.
