Pros

- Engineering talent is top notch, especially the senior talent that have been at the company for 5+ years. Lots to learn and take away from these people. - Core engine product is spectacular and very well developed. - Very few meetings and bureaucracy on the engineering side; you are given lots of time to focus on your work and learn.

Cons

- Very high turnover, even for a startup. Specifically for the cloud team, several managers and senior engineers were hired and let go within months. This is bad for team morale and young new graduates were often left with little guidance and confusion. - SRE's are extremely overworked at the moment. There are too few SRE's for the number of customers that need to be supported. - Promotions are difficult. There are very few promotions to give out, and it is unclear to employees what exactly needs to be done to get to the next level. - Lack of transparency. Engineering management and the CEO seem to send different messages. Engineering management seems to be more prudent/cautious on messaging related to company growth while the CEO sometimes gives long and convoluted answers to yes/no questions. It is hard for an engineer to understand exactly how well or how badly the company is doing. - Previously strong engineering culture has slowly been eroded by marketing and sales. The focus of the company at the moment is on selling and growth. As of now, most new features being built are attempts to see what sells and what does not.

This is really great feedback. I'd like to address some of your concerns: - Folks hired and let go quickly. At a startup, when you hire people in leadership positions, it is critical that they be the right people for those roles. If that's not the case, companies need to move quickly. Our goal is to get it right the first time; if we don't, it is hard on everybody. - SREs are overworked. Yes, they are! We should be staffed to not need heroics, which is why we're growing the team. We have two new SREs starting soon, and we're hiring at least two more. - Eng leadership and CEO send different messages about company outlook. Startups are roller-coasters. CEOs like to talk about the peaks, managers have to navigate the troughs. That doesn't mean that either one is being misleading about the view from their seat. That said, seems like we should make sure our messages are aligned. - Promotions are hard. For a startup our size, we have a pretty well-defined ladder and promotion process. We clearly need better communication, however. For example, there are no promotion quotas or limits. - Strong engineering eroded by marketing and sales. The top companies in our space spend far more than we do in sales and marketing relative to their size. We should be able to scale up emphasis without eroding our engineering culture, but sounds like we could use some work here. Thanks again for the feedback.

Honesty is NOT the SingleStore Policy

Pros

- The people (minus those from Tibco) are amazing and will become not only your biggest internal champions but also great friends. - The technology is strong and well-adopted at a handful of key customers. - In the past, there has been great reward and opportunities for growth for those who are successful. - Flexible work schedule.

Cons

If you are planning to join the sales team, you will not be set up for success due to the following roadblocks: - The executive leadership team does not communicate to anyone outside of the management bubble; therefore, it will be tough to understand the company’s trajectory and how to communicate any changes to customers. - All departments, especially marketing, are siloed to the point that you’ll be challenged to find any internal resources that are up-to-date. - Decisions are made in a vacuum and not transparent. - Sales operations is basically nonexistent and commissions calculations aren’t clear nor are they shared with reps prior to depositing. - Boys club sales culture that is non-inclusive to anyone outside of that circle. - Sales management is weak and not supportive of the reps. There are also only a few key people at the company (many who have left recently) that have much of the tribal knowledge and are overworked. - QUIET! If you’re joining new, there isn’t much sales camaraderie and the training materials are lackluster. It’ll be really tough to ramp. - Sales cycles are long, so unless you have an existing customer account or are on the commercial sales team, you may not close a new land your first year. All expandable customer accounts are held by a select few reps that joined from tibco. - Although the technology is solid, it is beginning to fall behind key competitors in the space. PM hasn’t been a helpful sales ally either when requesting critical features for customers.

Work more with less

Pros

- Decent benefits. They have changed since Covid times. No retirement plans (ex. 401k matching, etc). - Work is interesting - and there's plenty to go around.

Cons

- Transparently opaque with what is going on with the company. Communication is a continual mess with different streams coming from marketing, engineering, the executive team, etc. - High turnover (including layoffs that happened this year). - Understaffed departments. Work more with less. - Company core values are uninspiring and limiting. - Growing pains. - Executive hires are mostly external and rarely internal. - Heads-down culture. - Poor documentation. Tribal knowledge across different departments.
