Pros

The pay is decent, but not worth the required hours

Cons

"Smartsheet has strong products, but the management culture leaves much to be desired. Leadership seems more focused on personal advancement than fostering a healthy, collaborative work environment. Decision-making often feels disconnected from employee well-being, creating a high-pressure atmosphere that prioritizes results over support

Hi there. We appreciate the time and dedication you put into helping make Smartsheet a success. We value your feedback, especially regarding leadership. We've recently welcomed many new leaders who are deeply committed to fostering success for their teams and our company as a whole. While we believe this brings a fresh perspective and renewed energy, we understand that everyone’s experience has varied over the years. We’re sorry to hear yours isn’t as positive as we aim for. We’re actively working to enhance communication around our initiatives across the org. Please consider sharing detailed thoughts in our employee engagement survey so we can continue improving. Thank you.

Pros

Many of the people who work there are honest and hard working. While most people at the lower levels of engineering are amazing, open, and highly professional, the same cannot be said for upper management.

Cons

The company pretends to listen to their workers and had a practice that led to forced firing of 10% of the workforce each year based upon a bell curve (they called the 9 box) regardless of the employee performing their job to required levels. A few directors and above would regularly make up stories of why an employee might not fit within a certain box even though they don't even know the individual or have ever worked with them. They would then double down and sell it as if it was true. When they are called out, they would just say that it was their opinion but the damage is done since others would then start using what was said as truth to save their own teams from getting moved to lower boxes. They have a written publicly that Senior Engineers II and above are not required to continue to grow; however, many talented engineers were fired with the excuse that they were not growing. My opinion is that this practice was to make the stock look better before year end fiscal statements. They fired 10% (leaning heavy on higher paid individuals) and waited to fill those positions until after the year end fiscal statements were released. Several times, they had to keep telling managers to use the term "performance based" to justify mass layoffs. Now that they are NOT publicly traded (no more stock) anymore, their overall compensation package will struggle to bring in or keep top talent. Many engineers are leaving even though some of the top level leadership were removed.

Thank you for your review. We agree - the people at Smartsheet are the best and brightest. We’re sorry to hear your experience here was anything less than stellar. We take concerns about performance management and leadership accountability very seriously. Over the past year, we’ve made changes to our leadership team and internal processes with the goal of creating a fair, consistent, and values-aligned culture. Thank you again for your review, and we wish you the best in your next chapter.

Pros

Good benefits, good coworkers, good PTO policy

Cons

Priority instability, inconsistent feedback on performance; I was fired without warning for what were allegedly performance reasons, but I had received no significant negative feedback on my performance in the year leading up to being fired, and had in fact been regularly receiving praise from both my manager and my coworkers. When bringing this discrepancy up with HR, they did not seem to have been aware of it, but also did not seem to have the ability to stop the firing process.
