Once Great to Work For

Pros

Flexibility, decent yearly raises, bonuses

Cons

Flexibility also means no structure. Clear favoritism from management to staff. No HR, some people get away with almost anything and other people constantly criticized.

Needs improvement, but that won't happen

Pros

Regular raises and bonuses. There are many nice, hardworking people at SmartSign. Unfortunately not enough of them are at the top. There are genuine friendships made within departments (not solely based on commiserating, but that's certainly a foundation for many). Most people who work here deserve better but have lost motivation.

Cons

You should go into this job with a short-term mindset. Get in, make some money, get out, go somewhere better. There is a lack of transparency between the C-Suite and their employees, which I assume is because there's no clear vision of where company is headed. Probably towards being sold. That could be for the best, as there's a large group of people who, for all their complaining and low morale, have stuck around out of comfort and routine. Back to management, where there's no apparent rhyme or reason behind "strategic" decisions. As a whole, the mindset of this company is outdated. There's not enough regard for the well-being of SmartSign employees (no paid maternity leave!), very little flexibility and understanding when it comes to inclement weather, appointments, etc. Every single minute of work missed is expected to be made up, even if tasks are completed. Do not expect summer Fridays or federal holidays off. There's no leaving early because you've finished all your work for the day. They are NOT generous in terms of time off, with very little regard for employees who need to travel around the holidays. Overall, it's an uneasy, distrustful environment, both of management towards staff and vice versa. It's not until you've found a better opportunity that you fully realize how toxic this place is. You won't be rewarded for going above and beyond, and the atmosphere overall is stagnant and deflating.

Pros

SmartSign is a great company to work for if you are fresh out of college, or if you are in between jobs.

Cons

There is NO structure at SmartSign! Absolutely none! Some employees who have been there for years gets the short end of the stick, but if you are new and have the "right type of background" the red carpet is rolled out for you. You cannot move up in SmartSign, so don't get too comfortable or 3 years later you will look up and still be in the same position. If you didn't attend a "good school" you are not going to make it farther than maybe customer service or sales. The owner is a really nice man, but he's very aloof of the real issues that are going on in his company.
