Pros

If you just graduated and aren't sure what direction you want your career to go in, you will get a ton of experience in different areas. There will be a lot of admin work and you'll be underpaid and overworked, but you'll at least get good experience to add to your resume.

Cons

All of the other negative reviews are accurate. You'll be underpaid, and overworked, they use BS company policies as a reason to not promote you, or why they can't give you a raise - especially if you work for more than one client (i.e., we wish we could pay you more but it's not in client X's budget!) Your experience will definitely depend on your specific client team, but they overall theme of employee woes remains the same. It got to the point where I was essentially doing two jobs, asked for a raise, and was told I was crazy for not being happy with my low salary.

Thank you for your review about your experience at Smithbucklin. We take all reviews seriously, especially negative ones, because it is not the work environment we want to perpetuate at Smithbucklin. We survey employees three times a year and take action based on feedback and as a result, we are investing in an operations transformation based on identifying inefficiencies through experiences of our employees. We also conduct market assessments of positions and salaries and adjust an employee’s salary if needed to remain competitive. We are committed to nurturing an atmosphere of teamwork and fostering an environment that recognizes individual, team, and company achievements.

Pros

You get to work in a team and get to try a variety of roles. This is a good job for those who are recent graduates and are not sure what they want to do for a career.

Cons

Flexibility of job depends on what manager you have. Overworked and not enough pay. This is not a place for those who have more specific interests and want to move upward in their career. You will feel stuck.

Pros

If you're looking to get into and stay in the association industry, then the experience that you will get at Smithbucklin is invaluable. A lot of people at stand alone associations don't have any idea how to do work that is outside of their department (i.e. if you're in events you don't know how to do board governance, if you're in membership you have no idea about how marketing works, etc.) but at Smithbucklin, you get a full range of how everything works at an association. Especially if you're part of an operations team. It's a very collaborative, team oriented company. The internal classes they offer are also wonderful and cover a lot that you might not learn elsewhere. I once heard someone say that Smithbucklin is the McDonald's of the association world, and that's a great way to describe the company and the experience you'll get. The autonomy you get over projects can be viewed as a pro or a con. You will get to work on important projects and have almost full control over them, however they don't pay you what they should for the level of work you'll be doing.

Cons

Smithbucklin underpays. Most people I know who leave for stand alone organizations are getting paid 15k-20k more a year than they were at SB and doing half of the work. The work life balance is fine at the beginning, but with so much staff turnover, the work piles up and piles up. Once they realize that you're good at your job, they'll give you more responsibility and expect you to do more work for the same salary or with minimal raises. There are also the usual negative office politics, but you'll get that pretty much everywhere you work.
