Pros

Free snacks daily and Forkable lunch 4x a week when the office was open. $50 weekly stipend for groceries once quarantine started

Cons

This is truly the most dysfunctional and disorganized company that I have ever worked for in my entire career. Managers frequently leave OKR planning up to their direct reports even when the reports have only been at the company for a few weeks. These OKRs often aren't finalized until several weeks into the corresponding quarter, and even then, they can change abruptly to satisfy the whimsy of upper management. Company-wide goals change constantly with little to no warning. It feels like projects and large scale initiatives never get completed at Sonder. There are endless docs being generated and countless meetings being scheduled, but people still fail to actually execute once this is all said and done. If you ask your coworkers to set realistic deadlines and project plans for completion, they tell you that you're being pushy and the final work never materializes. A few reviews prior to this mentioned that Sonder has a supportive HR Team. What team? There wasn't a Head of People Ops when I started, and there wasn't when I left. There is no HR for you to go to if you're experiencing difficulty in the workplace. None. Finally, if you want to understand how bad things are internally, just look at the tenure of most employees. Even barring the recent COVID layoffs, dozens of employees are still leaving voluntarily before they hit their one year mark. I can think of several employees who only made it to 3 months and then promptly quit because they couldn't take it anymore.

Thank you for sharing this feedback with us. Establishing quarterly objectives and key results (OKRs) is an important part of how we prioritize efforts within each team and across the business too. It’s critical that this process is clear, effective and measurable, and that OKRs are committed to so that we can continue to build a world-class hospitality experience for our partners and guests. While it feels like we’re missing some context here, what we can derive from the details you shared is that this wasn’t the experience you had; we have an opportunity to improve. As for the size of our HR Partnering team, we have three colleagues in London, one in Denver, one in Montreal and one in Chicago who are all available to provide guidance and support to employees at every level. Our broader People Operations team of ~15 people, which is spread out across the U.S., is also here to help! If you have additional feedback to share, please reach out to peoplepartners@sonder.com and we’ll set some time to connect.

Pros

the concept of the company itself is fresh and interesting, they mostly seem to try to break standards and avoid becoming too mainstreamed and corporate-feeling. there's a lot of openness/transparency throughout the offices.

Cons

the hourly pay rate is absolutely horrible, especially when considering the benefits. as someone who has an insurance policy separate from Sonder, the benefit incentives are very small for the amount of labor, extreme variation in day to day tasks, and the amount of TLC bload-sweat-and-tears expected by the company. My rent alone is just under 50 percent of my take home pay. Some days I'm a manual laborer, others I'm in a warehouse doing inventory, receiving, and heavy lifting. Other days I'm styling and assisting photographers -- I would be thrilled to wear all these hats and do a much better job if I was making a fair wage.

Please reach out to the People team. We want to learn more from you. Our goal is to build the most amazing employee experience in the world for all of our employees. We appreciate all of your hard work and want to make sure you know Sonder cares. We are about to deploy our new performance, calibration and merit cyclical process and are building a self driven career path program called Triple P (Passion, Purpose, and Personal Commitment) to allow all of our employees to define their careers and work hard to achieve their goals. The career path program is coming in a few months.

It’s great to hear you enjoyed our perks, office environment, and company culture. If Covid-19 hospitality data proves anything, it’s that the Sonder experience is revolutionary — our tech-enabled, top-notch service is there for communities when they need it most, even during the most unprecedented times. Our occupancy rates have eclipsed the most popular hotels, and our guests are sharing really positive feedback with/about us. It feels like we’re missing a bit of context on what Leadership might be talking but not walking, but we’d welcome the opportunity to learn more from you.
