"Nice people" culture hides breeding ground for bullies

Pros

Good benefits, on-the-lot screenings and events, commissary, active employee resource groups

Cons

Everyone is so "nice" that they all suffer from being bystanders who are afraid to make change. This is not a place that values innovation, action or diversity. This is a place that values sustaining a status quo system of privilege and power. Toxic managers supported by passive HR and other managers who won't speak truth to power. Senior leadership who are more interested in preserving their paychecks and position than doing right by the employees. Efforts around diversity work is superficial and for PR but not genuine b/c the work environment is still incredibly biased towards women and people of color. Lots of work around Black and women's voices but nothing for other minorities or LGBTQ. I was actually told by my manager that "Asians and Native Americans don't matter" because they didn't account for enough of the box office. For a Japanese-owned company, I found that to be hypocritical and shameful. There is a clear divide between the employees and senior leaders. There's a lot of work around building communities by employees but there is "rubber-stamp," lip-service support from the Executives that lacks true, authentic commitment. Tony Vinciquerra seems to be the exception, since he seems to actually care, but it's not reflected in the rest of his leadership team. Tom Rothman may make the studio a lot of money but he's the worse perpetrator when it comes to modeling the toxicity and prejudice that abounds. HR is very passive and complacent. They do a lot of work around documentation but no real change happens where it needs to. Leadership uses statements like "this is how we've alway done it" or "it wouldn't get approved" to quash efforts for real meaningful change in the culture and in business practices. Bullies in positions of power stay in their positions. Those who are their victims leave. That just leaves a company full of bullies, eager for new, unsuspecting prey. This is a not a safe place to work.

Pros

Good people, smart and passionate about premium content. Emerging collaborative environment with new company leadership.

Cons

The vertical integration of the main premium content customers present a risk and an opportunity to grow revenues at Sony. Lack of agility and a silo mentality challenged the company in the past. A focused management team is addressing these challenges and changing the culture of the old Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Sony as an Employer

Pros

The benefits are some of the best in the industry. Benefits include 12 paid holidays, (usually an additional 5 during the Christmas period), 2 weeks paid vacation and 10 sick days per year to start (they get better the longer you stay), Medical, Dental, Vision and Life Insurance options, in addition to 401k. They host opportunities to see movies for free, have a gym on site, and have other events that are super cool to attend. In addition they have a relatively decent bonus structure for support staff.

Cons

Depending on when you are hired, salary is competitive. Nepotism is a thing here. Managers and Executives rely heavily on support staff, but generally show little to no appreciation. They expect loyalty, but they themselves are not loyal. There are a lot of egos, and being able to maneuver in the day-to-day can prove frustrating or difficult. HR is useless, as complaints are first funnelled through GC or other executives. Sony protects their executives first, always. Depending on the department, you can find yourself working in an extremely hostile environment.
