Pros

Been at Sourcebooks for over 5 years. It's been an amazing experience. The company has changed a lot as they've worked to evolve a new kind of book publishing business. If you love books, this is a great place to be. Lots of new ideas (some of which don't work...which can be frustrating). Lots of amazing people. The best job I've ever had. There's a tremendous amount of opportunity and I love that. My job has changed a lot as the company has tried new things and evolved in new ways.

Cons

This is a fast moving, growing business, which is really rare in the book business. I think sometimes people say they want change and want to grow, and actually don't. They want to do exactly what they've been doing in the same way they've been doing it. If that's you, this will not be a good fit.

Pros

I genuinely enjoyed the creative side of this work — getting to see manuscripts I helped write from start to finish. Getting to write back and jacket covers, see illustrations bring the words to life. I also loved other members of my team and still do!

Cons

Horribly, horrifically toxic. Me and everyone I know who worked there has suffered severe trauma since. We’ve all also suffered with our careers since leaving Sourcebooks — and a big reason for that is the work trauma we still carry.

Pros

You get to work for a publisher.

Cons

Low pay, unrealistically high expectations. Upper management is completely out of touch with operational/systemic workloads. CEO incredibly patronizing and always grandstanding. Pretends she's of a different/more compassionate breed but in the end she's still shoving AI down our throats, overworking her employees , but childishly demanding our adoration. Company is happy to add flashy, useless positions and let the operational employees work themselves to the bone. You have to drink the Kool aid to go anywhere her, or at least better get ready to fake it.
