Pros

Thinking of pros is immeasurably difficult for this place. The one thing I do love about this company is the people I work with. Unfortunately, the caveat here is that you love a very small subset of the people you work with, rather than the whole.

Cons

You hear a lot about how the company focuses on hiring younger, freshly graduated individuals. The older folks tend to be a little more bitter about this fact. What many fail to realize is that, many of these younger individuals are just as qualified, if not more so, than their predecessors. This leads to the additional issue of incompetent management and leaders within various departments. Higher positions are generally granted to those with seniority, regardless of the quality of their work. Much of the management are hired from the outside, meaning they come in knowing nothing about any of their employees' work. How do they expect to run departments this way? Well, the way they are then forced to run the company is to essentially treat their young employees like children, rather than capable adults. They take the words and actions of the less competent seniors as the absolute truth, since they do not have the knowledge themselves. The whole thing is an endlessly perpetuating cycle. Now, let's diverge onto some different paths, and talk about the compensation and work. The pay scale at this company works in a manner in which upper management is grossly overpaid, while everyone below them is grossly underpaid, based on industry averages. Even when you are "recognized" to be an incredibly high performing individual, they do their best to undercut you, paying you less than even people they believe to be doing work of lower quality. It's all about getting the cheapest labor to do the most work here. Work-wise, the company varies between departments, but the same general issues occur throughout. The systems break down almost monthly, forcing various departments to jump through hurdles both consisting of time and stress. Despite the systems malfunctioning on a regular basis, any delays and issues that crop up are instantly blamed on the lower tier employees. There is very little accountability for higher positions, since they often use their "underlings" as scapegoats. It's no wonder why almost anyone you talk to wants to leave. Avoid at all costs.

Pros

The people that worked there made it very enjoyable. It was also a fairly low bar for entry. It is a great place to start a career in software, and get experience. You are able to get a couple promotions in a few years to show a better job title.

Cons

Their model is to hire high potential, but low experience employees and then churn them out every few years. Because of this, the pay is terrible. Do not expect to get paid your market value. Come in with no experience, get a couple promotions, then go find another job that pays well. I got a 60% increase when I left. Also, most of the competent sales leadership has left since I left. I can't speak for new leadership, but I do not get good reviews from people I am still connected with there.

Hello, thank you for your review. I agree the people here create a positive and fun work environment that makes Sovos a great place to work. We aim to be open and honest in our hiring process to ensure we’re a good match for each other. We take pride in the career development opportunities we provide our employees to be promoted. A key tool driving this culture in our sales teams is our regular, structured performance review processes where employees can recap their accomplishments each quarter and each year and discuss their career goals with their manager to ensure you’re getting the resources you need to take your career to the next level. Regarding your comment on churn and market-value pay, we do not operate by the plan you have stated. It is true that we want to be an accessible employer and break down barriers to entry. However, we benchmark our compensation structures regularly to remain fair to our employees and competitive in our market. We do hold our employees accountable for their performance and expect that they will be hitting their goals, and they will be rewarded based on their success. We have added new leadership to our teams and have been receiving great feedback from employees, customers, and investors on the new ideas these leaders have been bringing in and implementing. Finally, DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) is an extremely important topic and conversation to us here at Sovos. With one of our core values as Be Inclusive, we expect this is a shared value throughout our teams and leadership. We will continue to carve out time and resources to ensure we are continually improving, growing, and learning together on DEIB topics. We are committed to providing a safe place for employees to bring their whole selves to work every day and we know there are always improvements we can make. I am sorry you do not share this value. Thank you for providing your thoughts. We wish you the best of luck with your career beyond Sovos. Alice Katwan - President, Revenue

Pros

WFH Flexibility Early-career stepping stone company

Cons

This company has taken a nose dive in the past year with new leadership and mass layoffs. New CEO is clearly making the company as lean as possible to set it up to be acquired, as he has done several times in his career. Shame that a former great place to work has fallen off this quickly.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We value your perspective and take your observations seriously. As you know, and we communicated regularly since the new leadership team has been here, Sovos is actually investing more than it ever has in the company’s history. More in its employees, its customers, and its technology. We are not ‘making the company lean to sell it’, we are making the company more innovative, transformative, efficient and streamlined to compete effectively and win in a much more dynamic and highly competitive environment. Our clients require more from us than ever before and we have the great opportunity to change how and what we deliver for them. So there is absolutely zero notion of ‘getting lean to sell’, it’s 100% ‘getting more efficient and investing more than ever in the right ways (and yes, that means some different ways) to make the company even stronger, a better partner for our customers, and a better / more successful company for our employees Thousands of employees in the company recognize and feel this. They can tangibly feel the focus on DE&I, on ESG, on Culture, on Teamwork and Collaboration (One Sovos!), on Transparency and Communication, on Employee Wellness. We hear daily how much the double-down focus and investment in these areas is appreciated. Change is hard – but it is necessary. And it’s something we do together as a team, every single team member is involved and makes a huge difference and a huge impact. Not advancing these changes would be a disservice to our employees, partners, and customers. Despite how hard it is, I am excited that we have made these changes and that our employees, clients, and partners are starting to feel the highly positive impacts. We and I truly value your feedback, and thank you for the contributions you made when you were here. I wish you the best of luck as you continue your career. - Kevin Akeroyd CEO
