Toxic Cutthroat Culture

Pros

Unlimited P T O .

Cons

Under new leadership, the company took a slash-and-burn approach to its workforce, pushing out high performers while setting unclear expectations for those who remained. The perception that existing employees were performing poorly was pervasive across departments, despite evidence to the contrary. Those who left took with them incredibly valuable institutional knowledge on an incredibly complicated product. Meanwhile, new executives seem to know very little about the product, implementation, or the market. There was little opportunity for employees to bring their authentic selves to work. Collaboration between established cross-functional partners was actively discouraged by leaders, creating a toxic and cutthroat atmosphere. At times, it felt like new executives were more focused on political posturing within the org than they were on achieving objectives.

We acknowledge that the past year has brought significant changes. I want to be very clear, for us to remain competitive in this market, these strategic changes needed to happen. Our customers and partners have spoken loudly and want us – they demand that we – make changes. They do not want to live in a world where they must invest in people, processes, and system integrations across multiple not-at-scale, non-integrated, regional technology solutions. For us to hear this call, and to ignore it, would be a disservice to our customers, for sure, but it would be an even larger disservice to our employees who put their trust in us to build a profitable and sustainable business. To regain our throne as the industry leader, we had to make some decisions about where and how to best invest. And I have mentioned this many times, but I want to highlight that we have not stopped investing in our teams. In fact, we are investing substantially more than we ever had before – we are just investing it differently. That does mean that some roles at Sovos may have changed, and that people have been impacted by that. We take seriously any changes that we make that impact our employees. There is not, and there never has been, any plan to push out our top performers. In fact, we’re making tremendous progress in not only growing the business, but employee opportunities in the process. Amidst all the changes and org restructurings, we’ve promoted ~400 team members this year and welcomed 200+ new folks into the company. Our expertise in tax compliance remains unparalleled, supported by a global team of regulatory counsels and tax experts who monitor and report on regulatory changes, ensuring our platform is up-to-date. We understand that new leadership can take some getting used to. You may not have had the opportunity to hear about our extensive communication efforts, including open mics, regional and team discussions, and one-on-one meetings, where we've detailed our strategy, changes, financial results, and new product offering. A leader may talk about something they enjoy outside of work occasionally (because our leaders are people too!) but our focus is reflective of the importance we place on keeping everyone informed and engaged.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We believe the remote working experience has allowed us to grow significantly in the past few years, opening up our roles to gain more talent and “dip our toes in” to new markets and intelligent individuals around the world. I agree that the people here at Sovos make this company the best place to work! We truly value our customers and hold our teams to high standards when it comes to customer service and satisfaction. Regarding your thoughts on pay, we do re-evaluate our compensation structures regularly and are committed to providing competitive and fair compensation to our employees. We will continue to do so in the future. If you are curious about how you can grow within Sovos, please use our career development resources including open conversations with your manager, our SharePoint pages, and e-learning systems like Sovos U and LinkedIn Learning. I do have to disagree with your comments on collaboration across departments. This is so important at Sovos as we have to communicate with other departments, especially within our client facing roles. Our customer journey does not begin and end with our Services teams. We serve as a proactive partner for Sovos customers, orchestrating and delivering value throughout the entire customer journey to Earn Advocacy. None of our services are completely hands off for clients, so while we take away a large amount of the burden of these processes, we interact and communicate with clients throughout. If you want to learn more about our Customer Journey and how you can help improve their experience with collaboration across teams, please reach out to me. Thank you again for your review, we appreciate it very much. - Dominic Constandi, Chief Customer Officer

Hello, thank you for your review. We agree that flexibility is extremely important for our teams and are proud of the “in person with a purpose” approach we’ve adapted to. Our flexible work environment is one of the great benefits (alongside flexible time off, a strong focus on career development and more) that complements competitive salaries to deliver the Sovos Total Rewards approach. I do have a different perspective on focusing attention on our employees. We believe in a world class company culture, that can only be powered by our team. To me, our culture is our core values, and it is remarkable to see our core values in action every day across our vibrant and connected global team. Particularly as we go through a period of remarkable and impactful change at Sovos right now, as we make the transition from individual point solutions to the global industry-leading platform that our customers need. While we can (and will!) always do more together to live our values, strengthen our culture and focus on employees, they are embedded in all the ways we recognize, appreciate, support and engage with team members – from our transparent communications to the total rewards I mentioned above to employee and cultural programs. If you would like to share some of your own ideas, I encourage you to connect with your senior leader, regional HR team or feel free to reach out to me directly. My door is also open. Your feedback is important to us, and we have many plans in progress to Level Up internally and externally. - Laura Handler, Chief of Staff
