Pros

If one thing hasn't changed over the years, it's that I still working with great, smart people. My work and life balance remain unchanged as well. At least in the development department, our time off is considered flexible and within reason. I feel very comfortable with my team and manager. I believe my manager has interest in furthering my career to the best of his/her capabilities. Despite the recent layoff, current employees still get to enjoy the free drinks and snacks in the kitchen, the yoga/boot camp classes and other benefits. They still continue with fun company-wide events like salsa contest, field day and holiday parties. The healthcare is pretty much the same as before.

Cons

The direction of the company has changed in such a way that makes the future of the company very unclear. The strategy changes over and over, with the hopes of finding something profitable, but we have been abandoning projects that were highly invested in previously. This type of change has dissolved sometimes either completely or moved people around, possibly onto things they are not as enthusiastic about. Echoing what others have said, the company is hardly diverse. There is some diversity in development, but the same can not be said of other departments. It's not a requirement for me, though, if we are choosing the right people to get the job done. The amount of communication from top-to-bottom is much less than before. It also seems like people are giving less effort in making information accessible or easily understandable. Some people, managers specifically, are still being over-worked with the amount of responsibilities they have. Most individuals feel like they are spread thin with the amount of projects they have. Recent departures have caused teams to be short-staffed. The pay is still below average.

Pros

Spiceworks is a great place to get your first job out of college: there is beer; you become best friends with your co-workers; you feel part of something. After about 6 months, the orange kool-aid WILL wear off and you will realize that you are are just a disposable worker doing mindless work. You'll just keep reminding yourself, "oh but I went through the infamous interview process -- so I'm pretty cool, right? This will be fun again one day"

Cons

Pay is lower than industry for most positions. Leadership doesn't know what they are doing in the sales and media operations departments. Lots of new middle manangemnet. The "OMG THIS IS THE BEST COMPANY EVERY AND WE ARE ALL SO AWESOME" culture has shifted since Jay Hallberg took over -- marketing and parts of engineering teams seem to be the only ones still drinking the kool-aid. The product isn't very good and the company inflates every usage stat. There was talk 2 years ago about IPO -- no longer.... Notice how all of the cool tech companies in Austin are downtown? Well...Spiceworks is off the parking lot that is Loop 360. Wanna meet your friends for happy hour off Rainey? Get ready for a 45 minute drive. No bus options, good luck riding your bike unless you want to get hit. Still no 401k match. Spiceworks is no longer a "start-up" -- a 401K match is a basic benefit for most other companies at Spiceworks' level.
