Pros

I met a few people who were capable of engaging in an intelligent conversation. There was covered parking.

Cons

Where do I start? (1) The training was pathetic. 2 months of PowerPoint “presentations” and computer based modules with very little hands-on execution. (2) The majority of the “trainers” were unqualified and incompetent. (3) The vast majority of the employees and managers that I encountered and/or observed were crude, unsophisticated and unprofessional. (4) The company does not have a dress code. Therefore, there were times when I thought I had inadvertently wandered into a “red-light district”.

Pros

Decent pay for tenured employees. Stability! Great benefits. Few jobs offer pension. Excellent work-life balance.

Cons

The company has changed. There is not a lot of entry level opportunities for new hires. They hire so many people off the street without face to face interviews and the culture is drastically changing for the negative. Also, they are paying ridiculously low salaries for some jobs. I can't convince new hires of what a great company SF is because of how they changed. Some new hires don't even have their own desks, so the morale is low, low, low! Also, in order to move up, you need to take insurance education courses and study them on your own time. It is a very outdated standard that needs to be removed.

Pros

The benefits. Although employer matching contributions into the 401(k) plan are nominal at best, they do offer a pension plan. Pensions are rarely offered these days at most corporations.

Cons

It's a popularity contest. They put people in charge that lack the skills to effectively manage a team (many managers act in illegal ways towards their employees and their managers don't do anything about it). The morale is bad at State Farm because everyone spends their time judging others and working 60 hour weeks. If they would refocus their attention to work away from judgement, the company might come into the 21st century. The company moves way too slowly for the marketplace because they are overburdened with too many channels and processes. Each department acts as a silo - independent of other departments.
