Pros

If you are in a pinch and need a job right away it has to be one of the easiest jobs to get(cashier), Working experience to mentally toughen you up in the face of rude costumers. With the amount of cashiers it becomes high school again social wise. If your in high school you will meet others from other high schools. They do not drug test you. Unlike A&P there are raises. Good for a high schooler. It is just ok for a college kid. It pays well for a young person at home once you put years into it. Flexible hours to work around school or another job. If you have a good team of management then it can be a pleasant working experience.

Cons

Raises are getting smaller and smaller each new contract. The older contracts were 50 cents a year and time and a half on Sundays. Now its 30 cents a year raise and about an extra 40 cents an hour on Sundays. The company is no longer growing. Because of it management cuts hours aggressively. For years you could be happy with the job and then a new group of managers will replace the ones you have and change the attitude of the store. Some times management can be part of the problem and not the solution. Only a 5% discount and even that has a yearly limit to how much can be saved. If you work up front most issues will be avoided with management as long as your a decent employee. It may be an issue if you work in a specialized department.

Better than the other options

Pros

Minimum 15 hours per week, oppurtunities to advance in company in other departments, full time program, offers scholarships, easy to switch departments or stores, employee discount, flexible hours, paid vacations and some insurance after 1 year, savings plans and 401ks and pensions and lots of benefits, quarterly meetings with management to discuss improvements.

Cons

Lots of turnover, mean customers, lots of favoritism, you can talk to the managers all you want but they never do anything, if you have kids or other obligations they will not work with you as much as they work with students, punishments are either way too lenient or way too harsh, and if you have been around for more than 5 years you can pretty much do whatever you want with no consequences at all, CDHs are a joke, no raises except for union-negotiated ones for everyone, there's a LOT of talking but nothing ever gets done.
