Pros

I enjoyed working with the students. It was rewarding to see moments when things "click" for the students. I enjoyed teaching them tips and strategies for ACT. Flexible hours are great. Traveling to a student's location is part of the job and we could set our own limits as to where we would be willing to drive.

Cons

The pay. The materials kept changing. It felt like whenever I became more efficient at teaching the material, the materials would change so I had to re-familiarize myself. I had to do this on my own time without pay. Also, in my interest to do my best to help a particular student, I conferred with my regional manager (don't remember the exact title) regarding strategies. The call took 30 minutes and again, this was unpaid time.

Low pay, no clients.

Pros

Supervisors, everyone you work with is nice, students/parents were great. Don't require a lot of proof to prove you can do the job, but you had better be able to do it.

Cons

The hourly wage is worth nothing, because unless your schedule is totally clear and open, you'll have less than 3 students. I tutor quite literally every subject at every level plus two foreign languages. They will e-mail and ask if I will tutor students 45+ minutes away because I am the only one who can do that subject. Hell no. They don't compensate for drive time, and at 25 an hour, I'm making basically minimum wage for skills that are obviously desirable. It's not worth it if you're looking for a decent amount of extra money on the side because they obviously struggle to get clients.

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback. I am sorry to hear that your experience wasn't better. There are a number of factors that impact the number of students a tutor will be assigned, including location, schedule/availability, experience, fit with potential students, etc. Given those factors, though we ask that our tutors have the availability to work with a minimum of 3 students, we can't guarantee a certain number of students, and we tell applicants that during the hiring process. However, it sounds like we could do even more to make that clear. Thank you again for your feedback. Best, Greg President & Co-Founder

More Students, Increase Pay

Pros

Studypoint does a lot of things very well. They have designed programs for test prep that include both homework sets and practice tests. The website they have designed for their students and tutors is wonderful. My program manager is understanding and easy to work for. It is a very rewarding and enjoyable job. They remove the aggravation of advertising yourself by finding you students.

Cons

Pay is relatively low once you factor in prep time, travel, parent consults, administrative work, etc. Starting pay is at $20 per hour; however after factoring in all of the above it decreases to around $12 per hour. ( The competition pays more!) Second issue is a lack of students. Currently I meet with two students for a total of 4 hrs per week. I'm sure I could get more students by expanding my service area; however the pay is much too low to be traveling more than 30 minutes one way to increase my workload.
