Pros

Great curriculum Gained lots of experience in different areas Rewarding job, overall

Cons

Non-existent communication with leadership, no guidance at all, shady business practices leading to livid customers that directors are expected to handle. I was so happy working at Sylvan until the franchise ownership changed. Some franchise owners are absolutely wonderful people to work for. Unfortunately, there are several, including the team I worked under, that do not care about their employees, do not care about the students or the families and are only looking to make a quick profit (which is honestly laughable considering they have run all of their centers into the ground with their awful business practices and are much further from being profitable than when they bought the franchise).

Exploitive Owners

Pros

Teaching experience transfers to local schools

Cons

Owners offer less in wages than local fast food joints, preying on people who are desperate for experience. No raises. Demanding hours. Job requirements change daily. Even if vacation or benefits are offered, they can't be used. Owners will stiff you every chance they get. Do not work here.

Poor training and no direction

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

Bonus opportunities are THE pro

Cons

Poor onboarding process. Minimal training. No supervision and support for new directors. Very reactive vs proactive with issues. Does not see the big picture as a company- only focused on the day to day. Gives expectations but minimal tools. No feedback from higher ups. Lets employees drown with work and lack of direction leads to it being the Director’s problem instead of the team’s point of focus. Management puts people in positions that’s are not the right fit- talks of not wanting to force people into positions that don’t work- but does it left and right. Poor overall moral due to poor management.
