Good place to work if you need a graduate degree or if you're at the end of your career
Pros
Temple offers steady employment (even in this economy, universities are trying not to lay anyone off), great benefits (health insurance, a generous match in their 401(k) equivalent (403(b)), life and disability insurance, excellent vacation policy, tuition reimbursement for both employee and immediate family members, etc.). If you need to earn another degree, it's perfect-- its graduate programs are stronger than the undergrad program, and the class schedule is flexible. Temple is a dynamic and diverse university located within a gritty Philadelphia neighborhood. Working there roots you in the city, its people, and its interesting programs. It's exciting to work for and with talented students and faculty.
Cons
Despite its many positives, Temple, like any university, is a large and slow bureaucracy, with all the associated drawbacks. Although co-workers are lovely, in many departments they have worked in the same position for decade, creating an atmosphere of apathy and sometimes even entitlement. Presidents Adamany and Hart have worked to create a more professional atmosphere, but it will be several years before taking full effect. Another issue is the lack of young professional development-- the work force trends older and therefore youth is sometimes distrusted and overlooked (ironic for a university). The university therefore loses young employees to private industry.
