this list is gonna be long. First of all, Management is terrible, they will change the schedule without telling you, they act as if the club is perfect and if something isn't right, its your fault. They expect the top notch work while paying the legal minimum. I am sure if they could legally pay less, they would. They dangle promotions and raises in front of you but never actually follow through with them. They never thank you for working your butt off. For example the CEOO was coming in for a tour and they made us do super hard work to get the club looking perfect (which I think we shouldn't have even done since that is just painting a picture for the CEOO and not actually what the club usually looks like). After the tour, the SVP sent a email out to the management thanking them for their hard work however there was no thank you too the Associates who did all the hard work. I only found this out after one of the only good Operations Managers told me. Second, Pay sucks. for a gym that has a starting membership of 385$ a month with a 1000$ initiation fee, you would assume the associates would be paid at least 18-20$ an hour. But no, we are paid $15.50 which is the legal minimum for the county I am in. When I was hired I was told there was room for raises however after working my butt off to get those, I was told the Bay Club doesn't do raises, only promotions. At $15.50 an hour you cant even afford to live anywhere close to the club without working other jobs as well. Third, They dangle promotions in your face but never actually act upon, unless you are really liked. As soon as I was hired I worked my butt off every day. I led my team and helped my manager with things he needed done. After a few months I asked about becoming a MOD(Manager on duty). he thought that would be a good idea so I set up a meeting with the SVP to work on that promotion. The svp gave a very basic "lets have you start working on things to become a MOD" answer and than completely ignored it for the rest of her career (we recently got a new SVP). The new SVP removed that role entirely and is also having me do manager esk things with no promotion or pay raise. I'm frankly tired of it and recently haven't been working as hard as possible due to the low pay and other things I will talk about. Fourth, low staff and the management doesn't seem to care. Obviously a job paying minimum wage is going to have low staff however the work load they expect us to handle cannot be done when there are not enough staff working. the only people who are getting hired are teenagers and they cant work much due to the law which causes some hours to have not even enough staff to do basic stuff such as keeping towels stocked and cleaning up after members. Fifth, No penalties for being late, no showing, last minute call outs. Frequently the managers will say "well we have plenty of people on the schedule" which on writing we do however since there's no penalties for no shows it happens every day and it is usually the same associates who are doing it. Sometimes they will even come in and workout when they are supposed to be working however nothing is done. Sixth, The managers have no communication between each other. I can tell one manager something and than have to tell the other manager it as well. this causes issues with scheduling staff to work because one manager may say you work one day at one time and another manager will say something completely different. Seventh, Club is always in disrepair and the managers act like its ok. I have to constantly deal with members complaining about how things have been broken for months and how they are paying a lot for a membership so the club shouldn't have all these broken things. The ice machine has been broken for almost a month now and members complain every day. Machines are constantly out of order and aren't fixed for several months. There's mix matched paint on the walls, floors are disgusting, both elevators were broken for 2 weeks. Eighth, There is no way to contact HR anonymously, I have asked many times and am always told to email HR however than they know exactly who I am and the last few times I have email them, my managers are looped in without even asking me if I am ok with that.
