Pros

The BayClub model is based on large multi-faceted properties that include fitness centers, swimming pools, group exercise classes, racquetball, tennis, and in some instances, golf. This model allows the member many options to enhance their health and fitness. From a trainers perspective, BayClub allows the independence to work flexible hours, interact with a large network of members, and build a training business within their club. As most clubs have 2000+ members, there is the ability to build a nice network of clients.

Cons

The club where I am employed was only recently, (3 years), taken over by BayClub, so I have a unique perspective on the current business model as compared to the previous owner. As BayClub is owned by an equity firm, (KKR), I feel they have forsaken the goal of helping people and are only focused on the bottom line, ($). Don't get me wrong, I realize this is a business, but if you treat your members and employees well, the business will flourish organically. Post-Covid has been very challenging for our club. While BayClub still markets the club as "high end", to increase membership they discounted dues to the point that it has changed the demographic of our club to a member base that is less interested in paying for personal training services. Partner this with a 33% increase in the cost of services for some clients, it has made it harder to grow and maintain a business within this "big box" model. This company does not know or care about the subtle nuances of growing a business within their 4 walls. Over the past 2 years, they have cut staff so drastically that the facilities are filthy, equipment is broken or malfunctioning, and service is lacking. This has driven many loyal clients away, and has put the front line workers in a compromising position of having to explain why the facilities have fallen into such disrepair. Many of the trainers have had to train in-home clients or train at other facilities to maintain a steady client base. The past two years BayClub has changed our compensation plan 3 times and they are currently in the process of changing it again. Each time, the compensation plan gets worse for the trainer and more lucrative for the club. Recently our club has hired multiple mid/high management people from a competitor. This new staff has instituted policies from the company where they came from. The only problem is that this competitor has been in and out of bankruptcy courts. Why are we trying to emulate a company that is obviously failing at it's objective?

Pros

I love my job! I get to interact with a lot of people and make a difference. I enjoy creating community and the health/ wellness environment. Till recently,I have never even entertained leaving my field because I am so passionate about my career field.

Cons

I am all for a competitive work environment that encourages employees to earn their living. However, our incentives structure has been significantly slashed. I am noticing extremely high turnover from management positions. The work/ life balance is absolutely abhorrent and unfortunately that has an ill effect for employees under managers who are always in a pressure cooker. There is an illusion that you can climb the ladder but I am up to my eyeballs in empty promises. Our CEO is an elite businessman and I understand that his superiors only care about the bottom line but when you fail to invest in your employees, morale and productivity drop. I am not asking for a free handout, I am asking for a someone who values his employees and barks less.

Pros

Coworkers are nice and helpful and most of the members are nice and caring and love to get to know you on a personal level.

Cons

Where to start with this, seeing how this club manages is one of the most chaotic things ever. Let's start from the management on site, they in all honesty do not care about members at all, the things they say behind the doors are just horrendous and will do everything they can to avoid members they do not like. Some of the managers will even block certain members emails so they do not have to read them. Lack of professionalism is real they do not take into account other peoples time and will not fulfill any of their promises. If a member is reading this just know any request you make to fix something and being told it would be fix is all a lie they would rather find a cheap alternative than actually fixing the problem. A lot of the problems are from the fact that mangers lack a sense of urgency and hospitality, the priorities of this club is in the wrong position. Long term members are not taken care of but rather they focus so much on new cliental that they forget about those who supported them since the beginning. The Bay club connect app is a joke, there is no given clear instruction about operations here at the bay club and working here is a joke since no one seems to actually care about the members. During the pandemic they fired tons of cleaning staff and why? Because there just wasn't money in the budget for it but turns out the managers were given bonuses if they were able to cut back on spending in the departments and cleaning staff was the root of the problem. You will be blamed and expected to go above and beyond while the managers sit in their offices eating lunch and chatting while you scrabble to get some assistance throughout the club. They forbid you from asking for a raise and never acknowledge it. The fact that multiple people asked for a raise and they was no money ion the budget for to yet new hires were making more than you and you even trained them, Please ask me how this makes sense. Oh wait the new hires were family of the managers and nepotism is real and prominent at this club.
