It is 2026, and yet HR’s 'innovation' for Black History Month is a sponsored cookout. It’s hard to decide what’s more insulting: the blatant laziness of the gesture or the fact that HR is leaning into the most tired, reductive stereotypes imaginable. At this point, I’m genuinely surprised you didn’t go full-caricature and serve watermelon, fried chicken, and grits. Was a 'mandated nap time' for the 'itis' also on the agenda? This isn't a celebration of Black history; it’s a display of how out of touch this department truly is. Reducing the vast, complex legacy of our community to a backyard BBQ trope is not only offensive—it’s a clear signal that HR lacks the cultural competence to lead this organization. Instead of checking a box with a grill, HR needs to prioritize mandatory sensitivity training and DEI education for its own staff. We deserve a workplace that understands the difference between genuine respect and a shallow, racist stereotype
