Pros

Cutting edge research, great learning opportunities, resume booster

Cons

Overworked and underpaid, poor work-life balance, shady OT and timekeeping practices, no upward mobility, materials and equipment are not always the best. Experiences will vary based on individual lab.

Pros

Well funded labs, safe campus and sophisticated instruments.

Cons

A very unfriendly workplace which is extremely exploitative of international students and scholars. You will be paid for 8 hours and be obliged to work for 12-15 hours a day particularly because your visa status makes you feel obliged. While the management and deans genuinely try to create a friendly environment for all on campus, some of the professors are extremely exploitative and treat international students/scholars differently (from my first hand experience). Irrespective of your stellar academic and research background, you will be delegated the most unimportant projects and will be made to feel unwelcome. The place has a dysfunctional HR department that exerts no authority over the faculty. There is no employee grievances department. It's a really bad place to improve one's skill set and become competent for the industry. It's a sinking ship.

Academia is terrible

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

You'll get good publications and good reputations from a top research institute.

Cons

Like most of academia be prepared to work a ton of unpaid overtime and give up on any dream you have that isn't scientific. Try to find some roommates because the federally mandated postdoc wages are criminal in a place with cost of living like this.
