Pros

Really solid training. Teaches you how to sell and work hard Good product and very easy to sell. Get used to doing business with busy executives Surrounded by good looking, ambitious, down to earth people

Cons

Despite the solid training, management tends to be very bad. A good number of selfish/egotistical people with big numbers who are running around management making the company worse when they could just be sales reps and not bother anyone. On the contrary though you will also meet some of the best managers you can find here No work life balance. You will get yelled at and put down for working only 65 hours in a week. The job itself is depressing at times. Being a ‘clothier’ and rarely hanging out with coworkers (who are rarely the same age as you due to the turnover rate) isn’t the most fulfilling thing to do The pay is very questionable. You work your blood sweat and tears here and then come home to a sweet $1500 check. There are endless roles in the modern day sales landscape without the cons you can easily hop to that will give you double the pay for half the work.

Pros

-If you can do this job you can do any job

Cons

-It's funny that all these positive reviews are coming around the same time when I recently received a survey from Tom James to ask why I left and what they could do to improve.... so a lot of people are leaving/ have left including the ones that were top earners since the pandemic happened -Long hours (usually worked weekends) -Got to office at 6:30am and left at 8pm and still wasn't enough -They will make you feel like you are not doing enough all the time

Thanks so much for taking the time to give us feedback. I am sorry to hear your experience at Tom James was a negative one. We realize it takes time, a lot of hard work, grit and determination to build your own business. Tom James is dedicated to providing training, coaching, technology platforms, 1-1 meetings, lucrative monthly bonuses and a positive culture in order to empower our Sales Professionals to be successful. Our number one goal is building people. The pandemic was a challenging time for all of us. We are proud of the fact that at Tom James, we came together as a company, and came out stronger on the other side. We were able to pivot our business model, but really credit our dedicated and hard-working Sales Professionals, both new and tenured, of whom we are very proud. I am sorry if you did not get the chance to grow your career at Tom James like many others have. We realize we are not perfect by any stretch and there is always room for improvement. We are genuinely interested in hearing about your experience at Tom James. If you are open to it, we would love to have a conversation with you and get your feedback. We do wish you the best in your future endeavors.

Pros

clothing is beautiful and mostly high quality work. If you've never done sales, you will learn how to sell--they will HOLD YOUR HAND every step of the way.

Cons

The person who has the most success here will 1) be young, naive, has little guidance 2) not ask too many questions and "TRUST THE PROCESS" --You'll hear them say that a lot when you are questioning their vague policies or incomplete business plans 3) be in a position (high need for income) that you are willing to do ANYTHING they tell you.-----This company walks the line between a legit business and an MLM----their hiring motto---this was actually said to me in my interview: "we hire 5 and at least 1 will stay" People stay in the company for this "carrot" of being a "$3 mil + shareholder retiree" But, the catch is- YOU MUST INVEST IN YOUR BUSINESS (if you're familiar with the damage MLMs can do, you know this trick). They ask you to invest your measly monthly earnings ($30K-you can make more on unemployment unfortunately) "back into your 'business'" (by buying their clothes, using your own vehicle, using your own cell phone) and you end up hardly making any money until 10-15 years in when you can actually MAYBE make $50-$70K. If you are young, learn your sales skills and move on---don't waste your life here and get duped.

As a company that really strives to build and develop people, we're sorry to hear you had a negative experience. If there are any situations that you would like to discuss privately in more detail, we are always open to talking—just email careerdivision@tomjames.com. If there are any scenarios where we haven't upheld our principles and values, we would want to know and address immediately. Without being argumentative, we do like to take the opportunity when relevant to point out to any potential readers feedback that is factually incorrect. While we appreciate feedback of any variety, it's also important to be factual: - We have never communicated a hiring philosophy of "hire 5 and 1 will stay". Our average investment per hire in terms of training expense is approximately $25,000 in the first year, so this would be a very unprofitable strategy. Our actual hiring philosophy is "we build people", which means our intent with everyone who joins our company is to work diligently alongside them to help them achieve what they want from the opportunity. - No Tom James employee is required to invest in anything, though many choose to do so. All of our basic training and resources are covered for new employees. Our stock program is voluntary and not required. While we offer heavy employee discounts on our products, we do not require them to purchase them. - MLMs by nature are companies that build revenue through representative fees in addition to actual product sales. An MLM will typically charge for training/conferences, offer no benefits, hire only 1099 contractors, and in some cases require representatives to commit to purchasing a certain amount of product. By contrast, Tom James covers training 100%, including two week-long international conferences to locations like the JW Marriott-Marco Island or, this year, the Hilton Downtown Austin. All expense paid for the employee. We provide fully comprehensive medical coverage, a robust benefits program, and our employees are W2'd employees. We offer a traditional 401(k) matching program, employee ownership, and also a profit sharing program where we share our profits back to the employees at the end of each year. Yes, we are a direct sales company, but absolutely no, we are not an MLM or pyramid-style company. - Our average incomes by tenure group are much more robust than $50-70k. Average income for year 1 folks is $52k. Year 2 is $62. year 3 around $75. The 10-15 year category referenced above averages $140k as a group. Thank you again for your comments, and please reach out directly if there are particular situations you feel we should investigate more closely.
