Pros

Tom James is an ideal starting point for someone interested in a sales career. You will learn the right habits and sales skills to succeed in the sales arena regardless of the product. You will also develop a network of high level business people that will be essential to your success in the future. Work there for two or three years then decide where you want to spend the rest of your sales career. It may be at Tom James but, if not, you will be well trained and prepared to sell anything, anywhere. I worked there for ten years and have gone on to great success in my other sales endeavors. The skill set that I acquired from my time at Tom James has be invaluable.

Cons

Like any successful sales organization, Tom James has great leaders and others that are untrustworthy narcissists. The former and the latter can both teach you something from which you can benefit. Just beware of the narcissists. The company has a decent commission structure but requires its sales professionals to carry too much of the burden related to expenses. Most troublesome is that when people move on other opportunities, they are spoken off as defective of character and maligned for having poor judgment. The belief in Tom James is that no one can achieve greater success outside of the organization. That is simply a joke. Just be prepared for the leadership to take it personally when you depart.

Pros

Employees mention supportive teammates and a fun, competitive environment especially early in your career. You’ll never be short on motivational speeches or energy in the office. Dont drink the Kool-Aid.

Cons

If you're considering working here, proceed with caution. Success at this company typically comes to individuals who are: Young, inexperienced, and lacking professional guidance Willing to accept vague answers and constantly told to “trust the process” (a phrase you’ll hear often when asking reasonable questions about unclear policies or business models) In a financially vulnerable position—so desperate for income they’re willing to do whatever’s asked The company openly admits to high turnover. During my interview, I was told, “We hire five people, and we expect at least one to stay.” That alone says a lot about how they view employees—as disposable and easily replaced. They dangle the dream of becoming a "$3M shareholder retiree"—but the path to that is intentionally murky. You're told you must "invest in your business," which really means spending your own money on: Company clothing Gas and vehicle wear-and-tear Your personal cell phone All of this comes out of your modest earnings (around $30K/year), which is often less than unemployment compensation. Realistically, you won’t see a livable income until 10–15 years in, and even then it might top out around $50–70K. By then, you’ve already sunk years of time and money into a system built to reward a tiny few while extracting the most from the rest. If you're young and eager to build sales skills, fine treat this like a temporary training ground. Get what you can out of it and move on. But don’t be fooled into thinking this is a long-term career path unless you’re fully aware of the risks and realities.

Pros

- Working with clothes (fun product) - Opportunity to network and meet a ton of successful great people in your area - The company really focuses on gratitude and goal setting - Forces people to grind - Nice trips to go on and to be rewarded with

Cons

The cons can just simply not be put into a bulleted list. This company sells the “Tom James Opportunity” to recent college graduates. They try to act like if you just make the calls and work from 7am until 6pm you will be successful. However, they force old “used car salesperson” tactics down their employees throats and high amounts of pressure constantly. They tell their salespeople that it does not matter if someone they call on needs a suit just as long as they are rich. Not to mention that most of the good prospects in town have been sought after leaving very few qualified prospects for new salespeople. As far as the product, there were constant delays in orders and fabrics going out of stock after an order was put through. There should not have to be tons of crisis management when selling suits but there is at Tom James. Managers pick at people’s appearance and the company is mainly white people. Their statics of how much a first year sales rep can make is also skewed because half of the people quit after 6 months. For a commission based job I would never recommend this to a friend unless they are willing to have no social life and have rich parents that can support them when trying to build their business.

We realize it takes time, a lot of hard work, grit and determination to build your own business. Our number one goal is building people. People who struggle have the opportunity to participate in retraining programs (company paid), coaching (company/leadership paid), financial assistance programs and other performance improvement plans. A recent review of our President's Club members found that more than 50% had participated in one or more performance improvement programs at one point or another. We would have lost these people otherwise. Our culture is to stick by and support people who want to make it work as long as they are willing to work at it. If there are any situations that you would like to discuss privately in more detail, we are always open to talking—just email careerdivision@tomjames.com. We want you to know that Tom James values your review and considers all comments.
