Pros
TransMedics is currently in a rapid growth stage with new development activities and existing sustaining of the current designs on the market. With the Recent IPO and FDA approvals, current focus within the company is to maintain the existing product lines and looking to the future to see how we can sustain the market for years to come. This creates a lot of opportunities for continuous improvement projects and new designs that can support these endeavors. This has also opened the door for new hires and new growth opportunities for existing employees within TransMedics. This is a drastic change from when I first joined the company, when many said raises/promotions were few and far between, and change was impossible. There has been a shift in the company culture away from this mentality.
The environment is fast paced and hands on. Majority of employees are willing to do what is necessary to complete projects and push them to completion. Upper management is willing to make improvements and eager to take on new projects. Even with the company growing, it still has that small company feel.
Work life balance is great, as long as you get your job done, and coordinate with your manager, they are not micromanaging hours and flexible when life gets in the way of work. Company does not always hire external, and promotions have happened over the past few years. Most departments are running lean, but most, if not all, have active positions they are recruiting for to help with this. With the need to keep projects moving, and many opportunities for improvements, additional resources are being added at a rapid rate.
It is a great place to work if you are willing to manage a lot of different projects, like working in a fast paced environment, are a self starter, and enjoy working hands on with the product. CEO knows everyone by their first name and is driven to make TransMedics the standard of care for organ transplantation. Upper management has an open door policy and available to keep projects moving with a hands on approach.
Outlook of the company looks promising with a successful IPO, FDA approvals, and a willingness to look into the future to make sure we are ready. There are a lot of opportunities for TransMedics, and if we stay on the path we are on right now, we should be successful going forward.
Cons
There is a lot of tribal knowledge and previous design history was not well tracked. This requires upper management to continuously be involved with major and minor decisions being made. Slows down some progress but does not stop it. Company appears to be committed to preventing this in the future.
No 401k matching plan but an employee stock purchase plan.
Lots of opportunities for improvement, focusing on the right ones will be critical to success. Upper management is realizing the need to improve and working hard to make this happen. Proper management will be critical for success but not impossible to manage.
Company culture is improving with new hires, but fairly quiet group and not much from upper management to help improve culture or team building. The overall groups work well together but team building can always help build a better culture within the company. Company outings, team building exercises, small lunch plans exc. would help with this. However, even with this lack of team building, overall culture is still good and an enjoyable environment to work in.
