Pros

Little management involvement. Small company feel with Big company backing. local office in Austin, Texas. If you need translation experience this is a great place to go to have some experience on your resume. The test is tough and every much better company knows it. If you get hired here, chances are you can stay 6 months and go some place better.

Cons

High turn over, sexual discrimination is rampant. Watched 5 female managers be demoted or pushed out of the company. Little to no training, they hire big then lay off big. Most staff hired on a temp to perm basis but after years can still be on temp status. Sr. management would fall asleep in meetings and didn't know most peoples names. In an office of 50 or less that is very bad. They will promise you the moon, but never ever deliver. Do not trust HR. Employee feedback surveys are sent directly to management and are in no way confidential. Which after the first time this happened, most people don't answer at all. Calls about discrimination are also sent immediately to the supervisor in question.

Pros

There are some nice people in this place. Some of the company's tools are useful and quite interesting.

Cons

The pay here is ridiculous. Go to the Salaries section and check for yourself - those are pretty accurate. Most Project Managers work 10-12 hours on a daily basis and, regardless, get about 40k a year (sometimes less). Overtime work is a gift that the employees give to the company. Also, the trend is to hire very young, fresh-out-of-college kids. Project Managers are basically all foreign kids needing working visas - this keeps them tied to the company and makes them accept almost unbearable working conditions. There are no in-house linguists, so all the translation work is outsourced to freelancers or other translation agencies, resulting in us having little or no control over the actual quality of their work. Attention to quality is not as crucial as the importance of saving money. Our budgets are so tight that we have to hire the cheapest translators, then negotiate even lower rates, and this goes to reinforce the negative reputation that this place already has (both on the translators' and clients' side). If you are a professional with expertise in this environment, I suggest you check other localization companies. I would only recommend this place to fresh graduates who want to have a brief and intense NY experience, while learning something about the industry.

Pros

A lot of autonomy with this job, and middle management is easy to work with.

Cons

Extremely inconsistent work. There have been some weeks when I've only worked 20 minutes...not exactly enough to live off of. No wonder the turnover rate is so ridiculously high - you can't depend on this job to pay for anything!
