Tone deaf management

Pros

Because management is so weak, you have a lot of latitude to define your own job.

Cons

Consider a scenario where the Trend Micro COO is holding a large company meeting. Then he says something like ‘Trend is really great because look at how many blacks we hire. Now, all blacks come to the front of the room’. At best, that’s patronizing. At worst, it’s racist. Okay, it didn’t happen quite that way -- it was women instead of blacks. It is still patronizing and it is sexist -- and clearly inappropriate. How could an executive possibly be so clueless?

some good people, bad management and lots of politics

Pros

some interesting work, some good people.

Cons

The company seems to lay off people as a solution to problems. But laying off people and hiring new people won't always solve the problem. Mgmt lacks any kind of direction. They just don't know what to do. And unfortunately, there is a lot of short term memory going on. People are not always accountable. So long as you know the right people, you are safe. I agree there is tons of politics and there is lots of nepotism and cronyism. And unless you kowtow to certain upper management in North America, there aren't any real career opportunities. It's best if you are Canadian also. And pay/compensation is way below market. With the lack of effective accountable management, this company will likely close or be sold in the near future. The problem is who will care to buy such a dysfunctional company?

Pros

Flexible working environment Some great people to work with

Cons

- Churn- reorgs and strategy changes every 6 months, like clockwork. - No will to win- comfortable being #3 or #4-- could be a stronger competitor with smart investments, but too worried about short term profits... on the path of running the business into the ground. Seems like they keep mediocre players and drive away or let go talented people. The effects are beginning to be seen on the business. - The CEO thinks that she is an expert at everything, and is clearly not. Micromanages rather than trusts the subject matter experts and leadership that she has in place- frustrating, demoralizing and dumb. You are expected to smile and agree with her, always. There is no tolerance for questioning or debating strategy, even when it doesn't make sense. - Cheap to employees- raises, bonuses and benefits are below par - If you're not part of the inner circle (and to be honest from Taiwan or Japan), you're not going to get far. No culture around promoting from within. - HR is unresponsive and clearly doesn't care about the employees
