Pros

Though we had product-market fit and profitability a few years ago with the top 5% engineer crowd, we decided to try expanding into a much larger market - any hirable US engineer. We changed from behaving like a series B company (which we are) to a series A company. I love the product exploration that we've been doing as a result. I really like thinking about product, and thinking about how we can come up with something that's really useful for the engineers and companies using Triplebyte. It's fun to be able to come up with ideas, advocate for the projects I think are important, implement some of those ideas, and see them move the needle. It's really exciting to see something you built causing growth in user numbers. We're all remote right now, which I love. Actually, we *have* an office that's open for anyone who's interested in going, but very few people currently go. I've talked to a handful of different Triplebyte employees who related the same experience when interviewing with Triplebyte: "I wasn't experienced in the field yet; most companies wouldn't give me the time of day; Triplebyte gave me an aptitude test that I crushed; Triplebyte hired me." These were all for non-engineer roles. So I guess having a product that initially began as an assessment has affected our overall company to try testing people's ability rather than relying on resumes.

Cons

These aren't cons for me personally, but the engineer environment here is fairly far on the "explore" end of the explore/exploit spectrum. So that means we move fast, do a lot of experiments, and try to cut down on process. But that also means that if you prefer to have detailed spec from a PM on every project, or it's important to you that all code be thoroughly tested, or you really don't enjoy some uncertainty (and the possibility of failure), then you might not enjoy working here. If you prefer an in-person working environment...we have an office, but currently not many people go. At some point (who knows when?) we'll expect most teams to return to the office, but engineers can request to be full-time remote. That's a plus for me, but if you prefer working in person with a bunch of other engineers, you might not find that any time soon at Triplebyte. Still, I expect a subset of the engineer team will probably go back to being at least partially in-person once people feel it's safe to be back in the office often.

Pros

The founders are all exceptionally bright, hardworking, capable and kind; I feel extremely confident in their leadership. The business is solid. My coworkers are smart, hardworking, and likable. Because Triplebyte is small and fast-growing, I've been given responsibilities that I would not have gotten at a larger companies. I get to meet heaps of cool engineers and learn things from them! I've become much more generally knowledgeable about software engineering since starting to work here.

Cons

Even though Triplebyte's codebase is pretty high quality, writing Ruby on Rails is kind of a pain sometimes. As with any startup, you end up doing lots of tasks that are important to the business even though they're not optimized for being fun. I think this is basically fine; I'm excited to help Triplebyte's business succeed even if it involves doing annoying schlep work sometimes.
