Pros

Great benefits. Vacation increases at 3, 6, 10 years up to 5 weeks per year. Recent new benefit of a paid 5 week sabbatical once you've worked for Trupanion for 5 years. Paid sick time and paid health benefits. And of course, as many have already said, you can bring your pets to work (once approved by the Pet Director). Great growth opportunities. Really, if you are willing to put in the work- the world is your oyster with Trupanion. It's a fast growing company that is constantly promoting from within. Very approachable CEO who holds 'town hall meetings' twice a year, where everyone in the company gets an opportunity to talk to him and ask questions (besides being very amenable to questions outside that venue as well).

Cons

Some (if not many) in management do not have the appropriate skills for their roles. But I think if they were given more tools- they could all be great. When asked in a town hall meeting why new management does not receive continuing education to help them in their new roles- we were told by senior leadership that 'we would rather mentor from within' and show them the ropes that way. Unfortunately, I think this shows that those near the top are a bit out of touch with the reality of those in more entry level positions. I think middle management is telling their bosses one thing and then actually behaving another way with their team members. Everyone (including those that he would like to actually DO the mentoring) could use continuing education, no one is perfect. I don't think anyone was expecting new leadership to go into any kind of long term program or anything- but individual courses would be a great option. There are many courses that could help people understand the different personality types of those on their team, also help manage their stress from managing people, and also help them with the best ways to motivate their teams. I hope current senior leadership really takes these complaints seriously (as it has been a constant complaint internally as well in our monthly 'complaint/suggestion box'). Also, I agree that nepotism is prevalent here. Human Resources needs to be more involved in the promotions to ensure that those performing the interviews aren't just 'going on gut' and hiring the one that they want for the job. On the flip side, if you can 'play the game' you will go far at Trupanion.

Pros

Trupanion is like a family, but with big business goals. This is good in the sense that it feels like you can make a difference in the companies future. All of the staff and management are very friendly, making it a nice place to work. Working in teams was never an issue, and coming to work was fun. Of course if you like pets, that helps a lot. Also, their way of doing business is as respectable and honest as can be for an insurance company.

Cons

The biggest issue with Trupanion is their way of measuring job performance and rewarding good employees. I would work hard, performed a very difficult job, but received very little recognition for it. They were measuring things that had very little to do with job performance, which affected all employees negatively. It honestly didn't make any sense. And I don't recall there ever being an "employee of the month" or anything to highlight great employees. Additionally, any ideas for improvements went unnoticed and unrecognized, and that was very demoralizing as an employee trying to help the company get better.
