Pros

Benefits are relatively decent, retirement plan and benefits are good but UC is working on ruining that right now. The old rule that civil service accepts less pay for better benefits and retirement will not apply soon, at UCDMC the pay will still be low AND the retirement will be crap. Great job security: once you pass probation you can be the biggest loser in the world and still not get fired. HR just couldn't be bothered with firing anyone.

Cons

Where do I begin. Stupid, ineffective management. Our manager basically walks around socializing, flirting with female employees half his age, and talking about sports and fishing with the guys. Politics and red tape prevents any meaningful change or advancement into the 21st century. Stagnant work environment with no incentive to do better: quality of work does not matter, you will get the same small step raise (if you get any raise at all) as your lazy coworker who is late all the time and spends half the day taking personal phone calls and sitting around chit chatting. Why work hard? It gets you nowhere. And if you work hard and do a good job without making mistakes, supervisors just give you more work to do because they don't want to give it to some loser who will screw it up. Recognition for a good job? Nonexistent here. The only time you will hear from your manager or supervisor is when they get on your case about some trivial mistake you made 2 months ago. People think UCDMC is some great, world class institution but anyone who works here knows better. I wonder how anything ever gets done around here, with all the inefficiency and stupidity that is tolerated here.

Pros

-Great retirement benefits -4 weeks vacation -Good health insurance -Great work life balance

Cons

-Extremely political and hierarchical -Stagnant, conservative culture with no desire to innovate. Many (but not all) managers are self centered bullies. -Senior management is very articulate, but at the same time does not understand technology well. -Zero career or income growth for most employees, managers manage to increase their pay up to 20% a year even when everyone else is furloughed. -Employee performance does not matter as long as you do the minimum work required, hence there is no desire to learn or try anything new. Stay low, get your pay check, vest in your benefits and get the heck out

Pros

Great benefits -- reason for the second star.

Cons

Extremely political, constant budget constraints cause a lack of innovation and technical growth, upper management has been in 'power' for far too long and cringe at the thought of changing technology to be a more efficient infrastructure, $50 a month to park in a very limited amount of parking spots, certain individuals have been in the same position for over 20 years and continue to do things as if it were 20 years ago.
