Pros

To clarify, I worked as the Bereavement & Spiritual Support Coordinator at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. • I loved my job. I provided emotional and spiritual support to mothers/families grieving the loss of a pregnancy or infant, as well as support to hospital staff. It was very rewarding, even if heavy and emotionally draining at times. • I loved my coworkers. The staff at Magee are truly second to none. • I loved my manager. For nearly my entire time at Magee, we had a great working relationship. Never one to micromanage, she was always willing to step up and quickly help out in any way she could. In the end, I do wish that she had been more willing to better advocate on my behalf - in a way that was commensurate with all of the positive feedback she previously shared with me. That said, she may have done all that she felt she could in light of her own professional ambition and in deference to those above her.

Cons

• On my job application, I was required to list a minimum salary requirement. When I was brought in for not one, but two interviews, I assumed we were all on the same page - or at least the same ballpark - regarding my salary. Not even close. I received a lowball offer for $21,000 *below* my minimum salary requirement even though what I requested was well within the advertised salary range. If there was an issue here - and clearly there was, the time to communicate this was *prior to* my two interviews, not after. • I ultimately decided to look past the lowball/disrespectful job offer for a few reasons, the biggest of which was a hybrid work schedule that I had clarified, in writing, as part of my job offer (3 days/week onsite and 2 days/week remote). Given where I live, I never would’ve applied nor accepted a position that required me to be in Pittsburgh 5 days/week. All was going very well up until 5 months in when my hybrid work schedule was revoked by a senior leader (CNO) who had no involvement whatsoever in my day-to-day responsibilities. I tried to talk with her, but she was unreasonable and unprofessional with me. Too easily triggered, reactive and defensive; in a word, she was just awful.

Management Makes or Breaks It

Pros

I had some wonderful coworkers that I worked with, and made connections with folks outside of my department. I greatly appreciated the flexibility that allowed me to take appointments and deal with specific traumas when they occurred.

Cons

Department management allowed me to be harassed by a coworker for almost the entirety of my tenure, despite numerous attempts to draw attention to the issue. It was always handwaved when I brought it up, even as my performance began to suffer due to the harassment. My harasser even admitted to harassing me, as such, in a meeting with me and a manager, and no action was taken. The workplace was horrendously toxic, and every effort that I made to try and make it less toxic was rebuffed.

Pros

The therapy department is great to work with

Cons

Upper management is either uncaring of or wildly disconnected from the reality of the struggles of many of their employees who are frustrated with pay, lack of support, lack of leadership, lack of follow through, etc.
