Pros

There is a good rate of pay and an opportunity to work within communities representing the federal government. You are part of a very important effort correctly count the population so that local areas can receive the correct allocation of federal grant funding and appropriately proportion representation in the House of Representatives.

Cons

The worst thing about the Census is its very nature: temporal. There is little knowledge among mid-level management about the Bureau's plans on a specific item until the day the project is set to begin -- or days after that. Employees are constantly being told conflicting bits of information. Even after the interview process, there is little knowledge of when an assignment will be completed and hourly employment will end. Change in this organization is abrupt and wholly destructive.

Pros

You get to know your community by walking door to door, double-checking addresses, determining the number and type of housing units at each location, mapping missing or changed streets and alleyways. There is a lot of autonomy: it's up to you to optimize your route, plan your day and breaks and figure out how best to accomplish your task of viewing every living unit within your assigned blocks within a reasonable amount of time. You can be a social activist by aggresively looking for homeless and other mostly unnoticed fellow citizens.

Cons

It's outside work, so the weather plays a large part in whether you'll have a difficult or terrific day. You may find yourself occasionally working in higher crime neighborhoods than what you'd ordinarily consider walking around alone in. And just finding a bathroom in a residential area can be a project--unlocked construction site portajohns are a godsend!

Pros

There was a week long prep course where you should absorb everything that you can. You are then let go to work on your own. The job involves going from house to house and verifying addresses. They change a lot in ten years. You are taught what to do in each scenario that can occur. You have a hand held computer that you input all your information and send it to headquarters every night. You are paid for your mileage. You are on a team. You meet twice a week with your team. You are paid for all of that. It is quite a fun job.

Cons

Houses high on hills and you have to walk up to the porch. A steep climb. Working in the rain can be bad for some but I didn't mind it. If you have arthritic knees or legs, they can hurt. Everyone at the Census Bureau is a temporary employee, so things can seem right confusing sometimes.
