      I enjoyed being responsible for training and supervising my team. The interaction with people in the field was great.

      Pros

      The interaction with people in the field was great. You can set your own hours and work fairly independently as long as you are getting the job done. Most of the people hired are dedicated and eager to do a good job. It gives you an insight into the machinations of our government and the an appreciation for the census process.

      Cons

      It is a temporary assignment so you don't really know how long you will be working. There are no benefits. The system is still very antiquated and paper intensive.

      Pros

      Tons of local jobs were offered to the general public. Some lasted only a few weeks, others lasted almost a year, just depended on what position you were hired into and how well you did your job. Management in local office was great, very productive crew of leaders for the local office.

      Cons

      Must do a much better job at screening applicants. Someone can just say they can type (doesn't matter if they can/can't, there is no test, just their word that they can), doesn't matter how slow or if they can at all (or if they even know how to operate a computer. Go back to the automated collection of information & payroll data...don't do another paper based Census ever again...I can only guess at how much wasted money was put into the 2010 Census by doing everything like they did 100 years ago

      Pros

      Flexible, different way to earn money! It was entertaining getting to know the diverse population in my area. Excellent team leaders had my back! Awesome mileage reimbursement!

      Cons

      My region paid substantially lower than most. Following Government policy was frustrating at best. Final crew work was sent out to some potentially frightening locations. More information would have been nice in those situations.
