Pros

The job is not going away. Excellent job if you need EEO on your side. Stable. Good benefits. Good Mission, Vision. You work your 8 hours and you are done. Once you are hired, it is hard to be let go of.

Cons

Hard to get hired, lots of competition. In the administrative departments they tend to promote based on who is going to put up the biggest fuss, not who is most qualified (there are systems in place to mitigate that, but it still happens more frequently then they would admit). They value politically correct over efficient and effective implementation of the standard.

Pros

You are working for your country and helping others. Security assistance in buying for supplies and services to assist them in accomplishing their work. Grade levels are higher than with DOD or VA

Cons

Poor leadership with big egos. Need better leaders in DC and in the field that can make a difference. Good policies have not been established with this new organization within DHS nor are they willing to change to streamline procurements better. They need to think outside the box. HCA and AD's do not listen to the experienced contracting specialists and officers. Too much micromanagement, easedropping, controlling your conversations with your coworkers from some Assistant Directors. Appraisals are so nick picky about things that have nothing to do with contracting--and too many layers of checklists. You are treated as a robot instead of a person, needing to get contracts out asap (god forbid if you leave your desk for lunch).
