Pros

This job can be exactly what you make of it. On any given day you can be a part of historic events or you can not get involved and just show up for the paycheck. Secure employment.

Cons

Usual government trends. Someone who started on the same day as you and is a below average worker will make the same as you do - encouraging average effort. Untalented personnel end up in charge, etc...

Pros

Good pay and location in DC

Cons

Not worth the pay or location Nothing is what it appears to be Policy means nothing here They do not follow the rules like other agencies Career and Confidence Killer If you are a serious professional, it’s a waste of your time Young professionals will get the wrong impression of how a federal agency should operate, so I recommend you all stay away I would not want my children to work here!

Proud But Disillusioned

Pros

Great tradition paired with one of the most important mission sets in the Federal government. Truly great people in the Field. I love my office, the Agents and RAIC... superior group.

Cons

Unwillingness to revise outdated processes. NO training for administrative personnel... you better be a self-starter and be prepared for long distance OJT. Overburdened support personnel and systems. Far too much oversight that promotes a culture of fear and punishment over training and guidance. We waste more paper in a day than any other government agency I've ever seen because of antiquated filing practices... just an example of the "that's the way we've always done it" mode of thinking. Being part of DHS has greatly affected, in a negative way, employee satisfaction and detracted from our ability to focus on the mission sets prescribed to the USSS. The additional layer of bureaucracy is an unnecessary burden stressing our already diminished manpower.
