Pros

The best reasons for working for USAA are an excellent overall benefit package including a 401k plan that matches up to 8% of your income, competetive salaries, help in paying for continuing education, and a pride in helping our customers who are members of the United States military. The company also has a basic philiosophy of fair dealing with their customers, making it easy to feel good about your job. The company also has a very good record in taking care of their employees. When they recently announced that they were going to close their Sacramento office they offered jobs in their other offices to all employees, and offered very generous move packages to pay the moving expenses. Overall the positives outweigh the negatives at USAA.

Cons

USAA is such a large corporation that ideas to change the claims procedures and claims computer software are often approved by upper management without first checking with the front line employees to see if it makes sense or would cause problems with other areas. This sometimes results in ridiculous changes being instituted and then there is no way to change it back because nobody wants to tell upper management that their ideas are misguided. The company does not tolerate much dissent or criticism of upper management's ideas. The worst downside of working in the claims department of USAA is that the company has gone overboard in micro managing even the smallest aspect of claims handling. They keep statistics and reports on the most minute details forcing the employees to jump through many unnecessary and time consuming hoops, all for the sake of making the statistics look good and making the auditors happy. Almost every time they institute a change to make our jobs "easier", it makes it more difficult instead, but management never sees that. They always proclaim the change a big success. In addition, in the last couple of years the company has been forcing claims employees to try to sell other financial products offered by USAA such as auto loans, mortgages, etc. (They keep stats on that too!)

Pros

USAA has terrific benefits and the clientele we work with is second to none. The facility is first class.

Cons

What has changed in the last several months is the excessive micromanagement of the call structure to include disingenous language, hard line sales, tricky misleading statements, and directives from management who obviously have never done the job.
