Pros

Work culture is great. Unboxed has done a great job of assembling a team of really fun and also really committed, hardworking people. You don't really deal with internal conflicts. It's easy to build healthy, supporting co-worker relationships here, even amongst people who work in different parts of the business. Being that Unboxed is a small-ish company, as an individual, you still feel like your contribution matters and has a noticeable impact for the company as a whole and for the client you are working with. Your opinion matters. Professional development is highly encouraged and supported. Unboxed has a great PTO policy and encourages us to use it. Your manager will harp on you for NOT taking more time off if they see you have too many unused days. Because the dev team is relatively small, each one wears a lot of different hats, which gives you opportunity to learn and grow a lot more. One week you might focusing on dev ops, the next week front end, the next week back end. It's a nice variety and keeps things interested and also challenges you to continue to sharpen all of your skills.

Cons

Sometimes the work load is pretty heavy. Those seasons come and go. Sometimes we work really fast and when working with really larger clients who move at a slower, more conservative pace, managing the mis-match in pace can be difficult. We could automate a lot more of our work on the technology team, but we are working in that direction.

Pros

99% of what has made me successful in my industry, I learned at Unboxed. I was able to gain experience and learn a work-ethic that I would be hard-pressed to get anywhere else in Richmond. You can grow quickly in this environment if you learn to actually take in feedback and you put in the effort. There are exceptional people that work here that can teach you more than an corporate environment can. Unboxed is successful because they uphold high standards and they are trusted partners for their clients. Join Unboxed if you want a fast-paced environment that will challenge you to grow and be a better you.

Cons

Unboxed is still young so the processes are loose and are usually a moving target since they are modified frequently to fit the organization's needs. If you can't work within ambiguity and if you are not autonomous, this is not the right place for you. The pace that people work here is extremely fast. If you can't find a way to keep up, working here will be difficult.

Pros

Unboxed is a 7-year-old startup. It has a solid client base and facilities, so it's more stable than a startup, but it hasn't become "corporate." It has been staffed with very bright people who love what they do and they do it well. The company is very creative and builds stuff that is entertaining and fun. There is a lot of collaboration and people can try new things and get involved with things outside their official job description. The office is flexible in everything from where to sit to whether you need to work flexible hours. Clients seem to love the partnership and forward thinking they get when working with Unboxed.

Cons

The same thing that's a pro is a con: Unboxed is a 7-year-old startup. Processes are not always well defined, nor are job descriptions. Things are constantly evolving, and so you are not surrounded by people who can say "this is how we usually do it" There are new challenges every day. You are expected to flex into different roles at times and usually to do things new and creative. Management doesn't usually have the answers and are expecting people to step up and fill the roles. Some people thrive in this environment, enjoying the challenge and the opportunity to influence. But many don't, especially if they have experience working in more established companies. Management is actually very open to criticism, advice, and ideas, but bringing this to them is out of many people's comfort zones.
