Supportive, Flexible, and Open to New Ideas

Pros

As a small, young company, Unboxed and its team members understand that growth is the only constant. This makes for flexible management, transparent leadership, and a culture open to new ideas. Company owners and senior managers are approachable and willing to discuss new ways of doing things from anybody in the culture. Additionally, because of its size and close-knitness, its easy to lose sight of work/life balance. To counter this, Unboxed constantly keeps team health as top of mind. While difficult to manage and stay ahead of, I've found that leadership makes this a priority.

Cons

We work at a fast clip. Folks that do well here are comfortable with persevering AND pivoting often and have a tolerance for ambiguity. Sometimes this can be exhausting, and herein lies the con. That being the case, for people who thrive in a truly fast paced, innovative, and challenging work environment, you'll find supportive team members and a creative and collaborative team to back you up and encourage you (back to pro).

A Great Place to Work and Grow

Pros

I’ve been able to develop my career here, and I’m proud of what the company has become. Some of the most talented people in Richmond work at Unboxed, and our clients are great. We get to explore new ideas, techniques, and technologies. The culture is very fun and friendly. Everybody seems to get along, and I’ve made some life-long friends here. The work hours are flexible, and working at your desk isn’t mandatory if you can be more productive at home or at a coffee shop.

Cons

Starts and stops on some projects make it difficult to schedule production. Some employees must fill multiple roles, spreading them thin.

Great People, Good Experience

Pros

Unboxed has the best office environment I've ever experienced. All of my coworkers are smart and fun - I thoroughly enjoy interacting with them on a daily basis. My direct manager is the best manager I've ever had, and he genuinely cares about me and wants me to succeed. The work-life balance is optimal, and the schedule is pretty flexible if you need to work from home, take some time to go to an appointment, etc. The leave policy is also super generous - you get six weeks of paid leave time per year, plus some holidays. The office manager, Bette, puts a lot of time and effort into making sure the office amenities are top-notch, and plans really great off-site events throughout the year.

Cons

Unboxed is still a small company, and as such the resourcing can be stretched pretty thin sometimes. In some ways this is a pro, since it gives you more autonomy and flexibility than you would have at a larger company. However, it can also be stressful and frustrating. There aren't clear development paths so it's difficult to find opportunities for learning and growth within your current position that will allow you to advance in your career.
