This is a call center. You are in Operations and are handling complaints and issues for customers moving freight by drey and rail. Your moves are constrained by equipment reserved for IMC, Motor Carrier, and lastly, spot customers (in that order of priority). You are managed based on stats and your given tasks. Completions of emails completed, in-bound calls, tenders, and updates are ranked against your associates doing the same task in different regions of the US. There is little time for breaks and from Senior management down to the lowly band A, a significant investment beyond your scheduled shift is required. Most people are doing 2 people's jobs as they are seeking to reduce operation ratio and are not back filling jobs. As this is a corporation, you must be able to communicate politically and receive feedback that may not be balanced. Your work product is based on perception, there is little you can do to control the outcome of your work reality, given your assigned area or tasks. Employee ranking is done twice a year with developmental feedback given to those ranked in the bottom quartile - which may be eliminated. Many are given preference based on their years of experience and chances of an in-band promotion are dictated by Senior Management.
Summary, this place is a grind. You came to UP for the benefits, and should expect to ride out your position until a posting across the street comes available. You will have to fight for a position by getting versed in interviewing, as most candidates you compete against do NOT know what the Streamline subsidiary does beyond emails and calls. There are little chances for you to use or develop additional tools or programs used by mainstream UP, so you must be pro-active to communicate, develop relationships, and seek additional professional and skills development.
For all intents and purposes, this is non-traditional part of UP. Unless you come from a transportation background, it is advisable to seek a better path to start from at Union Pacific.
