Fear factor-y

Pros

The people who "work" there are great. Most are extremely smart and capable. I have never seen so many people who are passionate about what they do. Their work ethic is very strong. They use (for the most part) the latest technology. Most managers/HR are very approachable and genuinely care about their employees. The new environment is very nice.

Cons

Even though managers/HR care, they normally are not empowered to help. The work load is extremely high because the company runs very lean. This causes a lot of stress. Commitments have been made (normally by those not doing the work) and Urban Science does not want to break a commitment...to clients. (Any commitments to employees are fair game though.) On the software development side, the culture has become extremely rigid. Strict working hours, attire, development process, time tracking, etc. Additionally, the company has become very top heavy. There are layers and layers of management (who don't do any real work) and less and less "grunts". However, the work keeps coming in. There has been high turn over in the past year or so even with employees who have been there for 5, 10, 15+ years. Lastly, to add to the stress, there is a "fear factor" that exists. Management seems to focus more on the negative/what didn't work instead of the positives/what is working. And the negative focus is just to figure out who is to blame for it as opposed to how can we fix it. There are a lot of employees who feel that they are just one mistake away from being fired. It's unfortunate.

Pros

Lots of bright, young people work there. They give everyone access to the latest software development tools, nice laptops with docks & dual screen monitors, etc. Some cool things about new offices includes lots of conference rooms with big TV's, and dry-erase paint on the walls.

Cons

They force clunky, outdated, horrendous software development processes on everyone that makes them spend more time on process than actual development. They have unqualified people in several key positions and this stymies growth, potential and change. Despite big disasters in previous efforts, they kept (and sometimes promoted) those responsible. Morale is generally very poor and turnover is high. The new open office environment looks nice aesthetically, but in practicality makes it much more difficult to work. Impossible to concentrate let alone get a moment of privacy. Seems dreamed up to take a good PR photo or by a Big Brother mico manager rather than by the people who have to work in it. For a company whose lifeblood is the capture and transformation of data, they devote shockingly few resources to database design, development, or maintenance.

Pros

-There are some very capable and intelligent people on staff with great problem solving skills -Technology is fairly current from a hardware and software standpoint -Decent potential to move around in the company in some situations if you can demonstrate the proper skills -Above average benefits package

Cons

-Movement up or laterally can be hindered by politics; sometimes what you know is not enough -Some teams will be expected to work vastly over and above a normal schedule with no compensation for the effort beyond what other teams on a normal schedule receive -Processes can be tedious and get in the way of getting work done; processes may differ from team to team or even be at odds between process management groups and project teams -Project delivery dates may be set without any input from the team implementing the project and are seen as unmovable. -Frequent middle management changes in the last 5 years drove a splintering of processes and practices -HR is slow to respond to project staffing needs -Company culture is stale; it is not a particularly "fun" place to work compared to other software companies -Performance based rewards can vary greatly and sometimes seem completely arbitrary -Excellence is not always rewarded; improving efficiency may get you a bonus, or it may just get you more work to do; some promotions seem to be based on placing a person where they will do the least damage vs placing the person most qualified for the position. Some hires and promotions seem to be driven by the fact that the candidate knows the decision maker.
