Pros

The people are generally nice to your face. Some are good people to work with. More reasonable choices being made in recent years in terms of technology and processes. Company is very invested in Detroit and does a lot for the community. There is a family feel to the company. The stated values of the company on paper are good, just wish they were actually followed.

Cons

Tons of infighting between teams. Operation teams is determined to make developers jobs more difficult and do not attempt to understand the pain they cause. Very poor leadership in almost all the management levels. The leadership is generally composed of people that have only worked Urban Science, at Accenture or some type of IT roles in the automotive industry and don’t know how to run a competitive high tech company, thus the company isn’t very high tech or competitive beyond a small niche slice of dealership network analysis. Company claims to offer solutions, but is really just creating custom software for each client. Company is not able to grow organically, not able to product any new products with mass appeal. Most teams are just creating fairly basic reporting and data processing applications, which is not a very exciting environment to work in.

Pros

It's easy to transfer between departments based on personal interests.

Cons

Even though Urban Science claims to be innovative, most of the solutions are outdated. Development is painstakingly slow and out of touch with the clients' needs. People who deal with clients on a daily basis have little influence on development. It's common for people to get stuck at a certain level due to the rigid career ladder. These people are expected to take on responsibilities above their pay grade for months, even years before being promoted. Employee turnover is pretty bad. The vast majority left since I joined, usually for better career opportunities or a higher salary. A lot of new hires replacing them have 0 relevant experience. The workload disparity is disturbing. For some people consistent overtime is necessary just to keep up (some departments have been understaffed for years). Meanwhile other employees are bored out of their mind. Not sure what you should hope for when you join.
