Pros

Great brand. 50% Employee Discount. Loyal customers.

Cons

Horrible communication from senior management. Corporate Managers lead by fear, threaten, and are condescending. Heavily task oriented, yet tell you to cut payroll and do not complete tasks during business hours, but don't come in early or stay late (!!?). Vans retail is disconnected from Vans the brand. They are not cutting edge, they run the retail side similar to companies I worked for 10 years ago which are now out of business. Micro manage with an insane amount of daily checklists and sign off sheets. Absolute worst company I've worked for, and would not recommend it to anyone except first time managers looking for experience and resume building.

Pros

I worked at Vans for two years. The employee discount is great (50% off regular priced merchandise, 30% off proshop and clearance). . .and that was about it.

Cons

The management at my store's location was horrible. In the course of my time of employment, the store went through a dozen new managers. The atmosphere of the store was so negative because every single associate wanted to quit! The hours are the main reason I decided to leave. Most of the time associates get 4 to 8 hours per week, and sometimes you are not scheduled at all. I went to school from 9 in the morning to 9 at night and they would have me come in to do a floor set from 10 at night to 3 in the morning! The management is not willing to work around your school schedule and will schedule you when you have class, forcing you to find someone to cover your shift for their mistake (which no one will), leaving you with no hours for the week. Also their is little to no opportunity for growth in the company because the management has no clue about the company's policy and how to train associates for advancement. Don't look forward to moving up in this company because you won't! Especially in the district my store was in.

Pros

Great 50% discount on full priced items. Very easy to get time off. Customers were always friendly, more or less. Reasonably simple shifts if you do your job right.

Cons

Expect to stay an hour or two late after closing, you will most likely always be waiting for the manager to finish their tasks. The back stockroom can get very hectic and co-workers very seldomly put shoes back on the rack in the correct order of size and color. Expect a workout, the shoe racks are heavy and you will be climbing to get a shoe sometimes.
